Laura Pratt-Charlton Leads No Confidence Vote in BAAA's Executive Team

Thursday, November 7th 2013 Nassau, Bahamas – Tired of the alleged infighting reportedly compounding the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations since its 2012 Elections, Immediate Past Treasurer and Star Trackers Executive Laura Pratt-Charlton moved a vote of no confidence on the entire BAAA Executive Team (excluding council members) at its November 6th meeting held at the BAAA’s Headquarters.

She informed Bahamas Athletics that “as a federation, we are not moving in the right direction and not getting anything accomplished because of the internal fighting and the only way it could stop is to take it back to membership and let them decide on a new slate of officers.”

Shock but somewhat satisfied was how Pratt-Charlton described the expression of the executives once the unanimous no confidence vote was finalized. She confirmed approximately 18 members voted yes while 1 abstained. However, the Organization’s Immediate Past Treasurer admitted that some of the executives were frustrated from the negative energy shadowing the organization, which to some extent, handicapped operations.

An example of that handicap Pratt-Charlton provided was the Ministry of Sports not financing any Federation in dispute. These vital funds not being distributed by the Ministry to the BAAA’s, she feels, is hindering the organization to complete its mandate. Once all issues are resolved, Pratt-Charlton acknowledged the funds would continue to sustain the work of Federation.

If there is a BAAA’s re-election, The Track and Field official suggests that Federation Members elect a President and then allow the President to appoint a Secretary General. She maintains these two key positions should work in tandem and the persons appointed to those posts should always work amicably.

When Bahamas Athletics asked if she would offer herself for re-election, Pratt-Charlton lamented that she is not ready to accept that challenge again, however, she remains a strong supporter and worker for the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations. If the BAAA’s calls another election, the Federation must issue a notice to the membership within 14-days. Pratt-Charlton believes a BAAA’s re-election is imminent and may happen within the next 5 to 6 weeks.
