NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The management and staff of Bahamas Information Services congratulate Mrs. Linda Woodside-Major, our co-worker, aka ‘The Silver Lady,’ for being named to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture’s National Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2015.

Mrs. Woodside-Major is being inducted to the National Sports Hall of Fame with 14 other notable Bahamian athletes at Government House as a part of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture’s ‘Sports Heritage Month.’

The Ministry noted in a letter that her contribution to the field of athletics has played a pivotal role in bringing international recognition to the country.

Members of her Hall of Fame class have been highlighted this month through participation in a number of activities to celebrate their achievements, including: church service, courtesy call at Government House, features on national radio and television, visits to schools, a visit to the House of Assembly, Clifton Heritage and Island Tour, and the induction ceremony at Government House.

Mrs. Woodside-Major first represented the country at the 2nd CARIFTA Games held in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1973. She placed fourth in the high jump. This was also the first time the country participated in CARIFTA.

At the 3rd CARIFTA games in Jamaica in 1974 she placed second in the high jump.

The 4th CARIFTA games in 1975 in Bermuda was her most successful -- she earned silver medals in the high jump and long jump events.

Later in 1975 she competed at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships held in Ponce, Puerto Rico, where she won a bronze medal in the 200-metre hurdles and placed fourth in the pentathlon. She also represented the country at the Pan American Games in Mexico City, Mexico, that year.

She was named 1975 ‘Athlete of the Year’ after being nominated by the Bahamas Basketball Association (BBA) to vie for the coveted ‘Athlete of the Year’ Award.

She was injured during the championship playoffs of the BBA in 1976, which resulted in the conclusion of a most promising athletic career. Following this, she furthered her education at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.
