The year 2016 has been a remarkable one for Bahamians, who have accomplished major global success in the area of sports, from basketball to track and field; and the 2016 Rio Olympics proved to be no different.

I would like to, first of all, extend best wishes to our newest Golden Girl and Track & Field Olympian, Ms. Shaunae Miller.   I believe it is safe to say that Bahamians everywhere are so very proud of you.

As the Minister for Grand Bahama, I would be remiss if I did not extend a very warm welcome to our island’s very own swimming Olympian, Joanna Evans, who recently returned home.  Although Joanna did not win any medals, she won the hearts of the Grand Bahamian people and for her accomplishments; I say congratulations and continue to strive for excellence!

Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie said it best when he stated that the “government is not just about building roads, schools and bridges but it is also about building patriotism, a unifying spirit of belief in The Bahamas, belief in Bahamians, and an ever increasing sense of pride in the great achievements of our country and its citizens.”  I think we are well on our way to accomplishing this.

Friends, the success of our athletes confirm to each Bahamian that your goals and dreams are within reach. However, you must want them bad enough to make the extra effort to achieve them.   I have no doubt that if you walk an extra mile, jump a little higher and dive a little further, success is yours.

Once again, on behalf of my family, the staff at the Ministry for Grand Bahama, the residents of Grand Bahama and Bahamians everywhere, I would like to congratulate Ms. Miller on her recent victory, and the entire Team Bahamas.   Qualifying for and competing in the Olympics, among the best in the world, is itself an achievement and what makes you all winners!

May God continue to bless Team Bahamas, and may God Bless The Commonwealth of The Bahamas!
