NASSAU, The Bahamas – With Karate being introduced in the Olympics, the New Providence Martial Arts Centre’s recent tournament shows that The Bahamas will be a force to reckon with. October 8, 2017 the NPMAC (JKR Bahamas) hosted its annual local tournament at the Saint John’s College school auditorium on Bishop Eldon Drive. This event was BKF sanctioned and supported by other local Traditional Karate schools including, Sensei Elrick McKinney (Bahamas Karate Academy), Sensei Brian Stapleton (Japan Karate Association), Sensei Churton Toote (Abaco Karate Academy), Sensei ElNathan Rolle (Kingdom Karate Dojo), Sensei Chinyere Ijeoma (NPMAC).
There were 72 competitors between the ages of 4-52 registered for this event. Special guest was Darron Turnquest, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Acting) of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture who assisted in the medal presentations. “With Karate being introduced into the Olympics it is vital that the Karate community increases the awareness of the sport and our young local talent,” said Sensei Chinyere Ijeoma, NPMAC. She noted that this tournament was a great opportunity for the young people to showcase their talents and test their skills in preparation for the Bahamas National Karate Competition to be held later this year. “I was quite pleased at the turn out; not only of the athletes and the supporting schools but also the spectator support,” she said. “Events such as these keep the students enthused and excited about their Karate training program.” Sensei Chin thanked those who contributed to making this event the great success it was. “ I am really excited and looking forward to the Nationals and I am sure the kids are too.”
