On Saturday, October 3rd the Nassau Rowing Club will be holding junior squad tryouts at the Bahamas Medical Center on Blake Road.

“We want to build off the success we saw over the summer with our junior men’s double scull crew that competed in the World Rowing Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro,” says President & Head Coach Kyle Chea. William Stanhope and Lex Fountain represented The Bahamas in that regatta and ranked 18th in the world.

Junior rowers from the Nassau Rowing Club have competed at the Miami International Regatta in 2013 and 2014, and will also be competing at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on 18th October 2015 in front of over 500,000 spectators.

The Nassau Rowing Club hopes to attract participation from schools across the island to introduce more students to the sport, which enjoys some of the highest rates of financial aid through athletic scholarship in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Athletes will be assessed on not only raw athletic potential, but also technical ability, aptitude, a positive ‘can do’ attitude, sportsmanship, and a team player mentality. “There are only so many seats in the boat, so we are naturally limited by the numbers we can take,” comments Chea, “but at the same time we want to make sure that everyone has a great time learning the sport and improving together.”

The Nassau Rowing Club is a not-for-profit organisation, and was established on 10 August 2012 by six rowing enthusiasts with the aim of developing the premier competitive rowing program in The Bahamas for rowers of all experience, age and fitness levels.
