Before they leap off the starting blocks, cycle down the road or dive into the water, three Potcakeman triathletes will already be winners—provided they are passionate about their pets, that is.

Baark! (Bahamas Alliance for Animal Rights and Kindness) and Pet Food Institute - Caribbean (PFI), a sponsor for the 4th Annual Powerade Potcakeman Triathlon, are asking athletes to tag themselves in a post on Facebook (@petfoodinstitutecaribbean) and share with the world why wellness and nutrition are important for our four-legged friends. On Aug. 7, three winners will be selected based on their heartfelt responses.

“We thought a contest would be a fun way to tap into this audience where health and fitness is such a big part of their daily lives,” said Emma Mary Young, Director of Communications for PFI, a non-profit organisation that promotes initiatives to advance pet nutrition in The Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks and Caicos and Jamaica. “We especially like that the Potcakeman is family-oriented. One of our primary goals is to get kids involved as early as possible in the care and well-being of their pets.”

The first prize winner will receive an official ‘sponsored athlete’ package which includes entry into the Olympic distance race and an elite level custom tri suit to wear for the race. Runners up will receive free entry into the Sprint distance race or kids’ “Puppy Triathlon” event.

As the largest triathlon in The Bahamas, the Potcakeman attracts more than 200 participants each year competing in Olympic and Sprint distances and relays. The Puppy Triathlon, for ages 6 to 14, includes a 100-meter swim, 5k bike and a 1k run. This year’s contest takes over Jaws Beach in Nassau on Sept. 24. All proceeds from the event will go to BAARK!’s spay/neuter and education programs throughout the country.

“The aim of the event is to fundraise while promoting an active lifestyle in a fun way for the whole family,” said Sarah Kennedy, Vice President & Events Director for Baark! “And we’re firm believers that pets are a big part of every family.”
