Rio de Janeiro, Brazil --- The 2016 Summer Games are officially underway after an opening ceremony on Friday August 5th in Rio. President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman said, "The best place in the world is here and now!"

Shaunae Miller carried the Bahamian flag. "I want to thank God for giving me another opportunity to represent my country at the Olympic Games," said Shaunae on her Facebook page.

"I want to thank the BOC for choosing me to carry the Bahamian Flag tonight. It was such an honour and a privilege. Thanks to the Bahamian people who continue to support me. I love you all and will continue to represent to the fullest."

Confronting the elephant in the room, chair of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach said, “You managed this at a very difficult time in Brazilian history, we have always believed in you. We live in a world where selfishness is gaining ground.”

Former Olympian Kip Keino from Kenya received the first Olympic Laurel. Since retiring, Keino has helped orphans like himself in Kenya.

Marching in the parade of nations for the first time in history, was the Refugee Olympic Athletes team comprised of ten athletes who are refugees, which was created to support athletes affected by the worldwide refugee crisis  by the International Olympic Committee.

“Now with your great talent and human spirit, you are making a great contribution to human society,” said Bach.

As one person on Facebook commented, " Despite all the harsh criticism Rio has received in the last few days, the Opening Ceremony so far looks grand and fabulous. A big shout out to the organizers working on the Opening ceremony with such a short budget given to them! Well done."
