The College of The Bahamas extends congratulations to Shaunae Miller on her spectacular gold medal achievement in the Women's 400m Final at the Summer 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

As she surged toward the finish line and toward the ultimate goal, Shaunae carried with her the heart and hopes of the Bahamian people. We salute her determination, perseverance and sacrifice that catalysed this outstanding achievement including setting a new personal record of 49.44 seconds. Not only is this an historic accomplishment, but an inspiration to Bahamians from all walks of life who have ever nurtured a dream and worked towards its realisation.

As an IAAF World Championships silver medalist and now Olympic gold medalist, Shaunae is the embodiment of excelling towards our common loftier gold. Despite being a population of less than 400,000, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas has distinguished itself as a leader and pacesetter in a broad range of competitive areas, athletics among them.

Shaunae's win signifies that size is irrelevant when excellence is embraced as a standard and there is a refusal to rest on one's laurels. As the impending University of The Bahamas, we are inspired by this as a guiding principle, particularly as the institution is aggressively building its own athletics programme.

We are extremely proud of our newest Olympian and also Team Bahamas for their phenomenal representation of our beloved Bahamaland.
