Despite heavy rain, over 200 competitors and spectators gathered in the early morning hours at Jaws Beach on Saturday September 21st 2013 for the first Baark! Potcakeman Triathlon.

The swim-bike-run route started in the ocean for a 750m swim followed by a 21km ride to Frank Watson Blvd onto Adelaide before returning for the transition into a 5km run along the scenic trails of Clifton Heritage Park.

“We had more participants than we ever imagined” said race director Sarah Kennedy from Baark! “We were delighted to include over 30 people were doing their first triathlon. Our motto throughout was “you don’t have to win – you just have to ‘tri’.  Despite the less than ideal weather conditions everyone had smiles on their faces and enjoyed the event.”

Featuring chip timing sponsored by Purina, the first person over the finish line was Jason Maynard part of ‘The A Team’ male relay. The overall race winner was Mark Holowesko in a time of 1:07:42. Anna Zywiolek was the first women’s finisher in a time of 1:17:18 and has already said she’s keen to defend her title next year.

Kathy Johnston was one of three first timers who also won their age group. “For my first triathlon, it was harder than I thought” she said  “but thanks to some good advice just before the start, my transitions went well and I was able to maintain my anticipated pace in the run.  I would definitely do it again”

The Liquid Courage bar and ‘jambulance’ kept spectators entertained throughout the race and provided a free beer or cider for all finishers.  Subway donated over 300 sandwiches, which were thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd.

Race director Lori Roach said “ClubOne Gym, Think Simple, Golden Wings Charter and Mario Carey Realty were just some of the fantastic businesses who sponsored, provided for or donated to the event. Our volunteers were all amazing and integral to the event’s success. We’re already looking forward to next years race.”

Following the adult race there was a shortened course “Puppy Tri” and relay for children ages 6-15.

“Golden Knight” 400m athlete Ramon Miller presented the awards, he said how proud he was to support and be a part of local sporting events like these. A raffle draw followed the award ceremony; the top prize being a Jamis mountain bike donated from Cycles Unlimited.

All money raised from the event will go towards Baark’s spay/neuter and education programs all over the Bahamas.
