Secondary
school teachers got an introduction to scholastic wrestling recently in
the first move to establish extracurricular wrestling in schools.
Physical
Education teachers assigned to public schools learned the basics of
scholastic wrestling in a one-day workshop conducted by the Bahamas
Amateur Wrestling Federation. The teachers took part in the workshop as
part of their ongoing professional development efforts.
Clarence
Rolle, president of the wrestling federation, said those who took part
in the workshop showed the ability to quickly grasp wrestling concepts.
There is a possibility that, with further training, good coaches for the
sport could emerge from the group, he said.
“The teachers were
excellent students, and they seemed to accept what we emphasized – that
there are tremendous opportunities through wrestling that Bahamians are
not taking advantage of now,” Mr. Rolle said. “By expanding into this
sport, we could develop more students through scholarships and travel.
The same opportunities are available for those who want to coach or be
referees.”
Keith Saunders, senior education officer in the Ministry of Tourism, moderated the workshop.
“Education
is limitless, and in particular, as Physical Education is concerned
with the development of the whole individual, this professional
development exercise featuring scholastic wrestling is ideal to this
process,” Mr. Saunders said. “Therefore, regardless of the sports
discipline being engaged for the teaching of the principals of Physical
Education, it is important that throughout the process of educating our
students, educators must be open to exploring many sources of content
that can enhance our learners on a universal forum. The teachers’
acquisition of knowledge of scholastic wrestling at this workshop is a
process of education in the right direction.”
Mr. Rolle said the
teachers who participated in the workshop would be issued certificates.
In the near future, further training will be offered and interested
persons will be invited to assume roles as coaches, referees or
organizers in establishing a wrestling competitive season for secondary
schools or community clubs.
