Team Bahamas doing VERY well at the Special Olympics World Summer Games

Los Angeles, California, USA -  In an event with 6,500 athletes and 2,000 coaches representing 165 countries, our Bahamian athletes are doing a great job at representing our country!  On Sunday, the first medal for the Bahamas at the Special Olympics World Summer Games came in swimming with Cornell McClain taking gold in the 200m backstroke. 

Adding to the medal count was Serena Newton with a silver medal in 25m breast stroke; Cornell McClain silver in the 100m freestyle: Lavonte Clarke with a silver in 100m free style; Deron Forbes with a bronze in the 25m breast stroke; Unified Team Bowling - Bronze medal.

On Tuesday, July 28th  Team Bahamas secured another medal with a 2nd place finish in the male bocce singles. Royal Hamilton was on his game and had to battle through two tie breakers in the gold medal match before finally rosining out by 2 points and settling for the silver medal. In the only other final for the day, Austin Green finished 5th in his bocce singles competition.

Update as of Thursday evening, July 30th:

Track & Field - Danier Rolle struck Gold in the standing long jump (male); Krystal Clarke got silver in the standing long jump (female); Mario Nottage secured a bronze medal in the men's 800m; Brenville Dorsett received a 5th place finish in the 800m.

In bocce singles, Colette Grant won the gold medal in her division and Tammicka Laing won the silver medal in her division.

Update as of Friday night , July 31st: It seems like GOLD was the preferred colour of the day for Team Bahamas and to top it all off, the athletes got to share their joy with a very special visitor, as former US ambassador to The Bahamas, Nicole Avant made a special call at the USC campus to spend some time and share in the joy of athletes and other delegation members from Team Bahamas.

3 gold medals on Friday as Deangelo Bullard won his nail biting singles division with a 521 pinfall to snatch the Gold medal from Singapore by a mere 2 pin margin.

Danier Rolle also picked up a gold medal in the softball throw, to go along with his silver medal which he earned a couple hours earlier in the 100m walk. Not to be left out of the gold rush was Krystal Clarke, who brought home in the 100m walk for females.Other results for the day included a 4th place finish for Zekuumba Major in his tennis singles and a 6th place finish for Amal Johnson in the 100m.
