The Bahamas Olympic Committee: Death of Sir Arlington Butler

It is with regret and deep sadness that The Bahamas Olympic Committee announces the death of Sir Arlington Butler, former President of The Bahamas Olympic Association and one of the heroes of the Olympic Movement in The Bahamas and around the world.  Sir Arlington passed away in hospital in Nassau, capital city of The Bahamas, on 9th November, 2017 after a long illness.  He is survived by his wife, and four grown children.

Sir Arlington led The Bahamas Olympic Committee from 1972 – 2008 and led the country to eight Olympic Games during that time. Sir Arlington presided over the Olympic Movement in the country during a time of great success, where The Bahamas achieved numerous medals and other outstanding results.

Sir Arlington was also an executive of the Pan American Sports Organization and was also involved in international sports through the Commonwealth Games Federation.   One of Sir Arlington’s greatest moments in international sports was when he made the move and gained support to change the name of the British Empire Games to the Commonwealth Games as they are now and forever more known.

Sir Arlington received the Baron Pierre de Coubertin award from the International Olympic Committee.  The de Coubertin award is the highest honor of the IOC.  Sir Arlington was also the first Bahamian to receive the President’s award from the President of The Bahamas Olympic Committee, Mr. Wellington Miller.

Mr. Miller said “The Bahamas and the world Olympic Movement has lost one of its greatest sporting ambassadors… Sir Arlington’s name still rings loud with many of his former colleagues in the international sporting movements of the world.”

The Bahamas Olympic Committee has already received and continues to receive with gratitude numerous condolences from fellow sporting bodies around the world.
