BAAA Awards Photos: Trevor Barry Wins BAAA Charlie Major Award

Nassau, Bahamas - Since 1999 The Bahamas Association
of Athletic Associations has held a End of The Year Awards celebrations.
Today at the Sheraton Cable Beach Hotel,
the top award, named after world class High Jumper Charlie Major from
the twenties, was presented to a High Jumper,
Trevor Barry, who
won the bronze medal in his specialty at the IAAF World Championships
in Daegu, South Korea.
Barry, with a best of 2.29m (7’7-1/4”)
when he arrived in Korea, improved his best to 2.32m (7’7-3/4”).
His personal coach, Keith Parker was
unable to be in Daegu due to illness.
After Daegu Barry medaled in several
European meets. He finished second in
Barry also won the High Jump at the
Central American and Caribbean Sr. Championships in Mayaguez, Puerto
Rico.
The award was presented by William
Henry Major IV, grandson of Charlie Major and Charles William Major
III, great grandson of Charlie major.
Dr. Bernard J. Nottage Junior Athlete
of The Year
The award was named after BAAA and
the Central American and Caribbean Athletic Confederation president
Dr. Bernard J. Nottege.
The award was won by
Anthonique
Strachan of St. Augustine’s College and Club Monica. Strachan
won the Austin Sealy Award at the Carifta Games in Montego Bay. She
tied Veronica Campbell-Brown’s 200m with a 22.93sec clocking.
Strachan finished second in the Central
American and Caribbean Sr. Championships with a 22.90sec, her personal
best.
At the Pan American Jr. Championships
in Miramar, Florida, Strachan bettered her personal best with a 22.70sec
clocking for the victory, breaking the championships record. At that
time it was the best junior performance in the world. At the end of
2011 it is the second best junior time of 2011.
She is coached by Dianne Woodside president
of The Bahamas Track and Field Coaches Association
Thomas Robinson Senior Athlete of
The Year
This award is named after Bahamian
sports icon Thomas Robinson.
Winning the award was High Jumper
Trevor Barry.
Frank Rahming Senior Female of The
Year
This award is named after Frank Rahming
longtime coach.
Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie won
the award.
Harrison Petty Collegiate Athlete
of The Year
Harrison Petty has been a sponsor of
the BAAA and involved in Track and Field for over twenty years.
The award was presented to 400m runner
Demetrius Pinder.
Collegiate Female Athlete of The
Year
This award was won by
Sheniqua Ferguson
sprinter of Auburn University.
Errol Bodie Junior Male Athlete
of The Year
Errol Bodie is a pioneer in Track and
Field in Grand Bahama.
Latario Collie- Minns, the World
Youth Champion in the Triple Jump won this category.
Diana Lynn Thompson Junior Female
Athlete of The Year
Diana Lynn Thompson coached World 400m
champion Avard Moncur in High School and was president of the Roadrunners
Track Club.
Shaunae Miller, World 400m Youth
Champion was the winner.
Collegiate Male Track Athlete of
The Year
Demetrius Pinder was the winner.
He had the highest ranked performance of any Bahamian senior athlete
this year. Pinder of Grand Bahama and Texas A & M University won
the 400m at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Collegiate Male Field Athlete of
The Year
Raymond Higgs of the University
of Arkansas jumped 8.15m (26’9”) in the
Long Jump. This was the third best
ever performance by a Bahamian in that event.
Collegiate Female Track Athlete
of The Year
Sheniqua Ferguson advanced to
the semi-final of the 200m in the World Championships.

of The Year
Kenya Culmer a High Jumper
from Southern Illinois University
Basil Neymour Junior Male Track
Athlete of The Year
Basil Neymour of Grand Bahama has been
actively involved in sponsoring Track and Field and other sports in
The Bahamas.
Stephen Newbold, World Youth
Champion in the 200m from St. John’s College was selected.
Keith Parker Junior Male Athete
of The Year
World Youth Triple Jump Champion
Latario Collie-Minns was selected. Collie-Minns finished fourth
in the IAAF performance list for juniors and first for Youth with a
16.55m jump.
Anita Doherty Junior Female Track
Athlete of The Year
Anita competed in the Pentathlon in
the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinborough.

Anthonique Strachan who won
the Austin Sealy Award at the Carifta Games as well as the 200m at the
Pan Am Junior Championships was selected.
Ronald Cartwright Junior Female
Field Athlete of The Year
Tamara Myers from Andros set
a new National Junior record in the Triple Jump.
She attends the College of The Bahamas.
Her national mark is 12.90m.
She won a silver medal at the Carifta
Games and the Pan Am Junior Championships.
Sir Durward Knowles Family Island
Athlete of The Year
Sir Durward Knowles won the Gold medal
in Sailing at the Olympic Games in 1964 and the Bronze medal in 1956,
the first Olympic Bronze and Gold medals for The Bahamas.
Andre Colebrooke from Eleuthera
finished fifth in the 800m at the Carifta Gameds.
Angela Rolle Under-15 Youth Female
Athlete of The Year
Named after Angela Rolle , deceased
of Grand Bahama, this year’s award was presented to
Blayre Catalyn
In the CAC Age Group Championships Catalyn finished 11th
overall in the 11& 12 category and set a new record in the 60m.

Blayre won the 100m and 200m in the
Under 13 Division of the Scotiabank National High School Track and Field
Championships.
Under-15 Youth Male Athlete of The
Year
Kinard Rolle finished in eighth
place in the CAC Age Group Championships in the 13-14 categories with
a Gold medal in the 1200m.
Cross Contry Male Athlete of The
Year

Cross Country Female Athlete of
The Year
Hughnique Rolle
Henry Crawford Coach of The Year
Crawford was the coach of Thomas Robinson
and a number of other outstanding athletes in the fifties and sixties.
He died in 1986.
David Charlton, of Star Trackers
coached Stephen Newbold,
World Youth 200m champion.
The award was presented by Diane Crawford-Fernander,
daughter of henry Crawford.
Roderick Simms Official of The Year
Simms was a long serving official in
BACO, the Bahamas Association of Certified officials. He is now deceased.
The award went to
Courtney Thompson.
The award was presented by Lorraine
Simms, daughter of Roderick Simms.
This selection was made by BACO.
All other selections were made by an
independent panel of sports journalists.
Corporate Citizens
Four corporate partners were given
special recognition at the event. Scotiabank, Kerzner Ltd., The FML
Group of Companies, and
BTC who was named the Corporate Citizen
of The year.
A special award was presented by Sports
Radio 103.5FM
Sports Revolution Award for Character
Anthonique Strachan
for getting up and completing her relay leg after she fell down in Daegu.
During the event Mike Sands, president
of the BAAA presented coach Kieth Parker wit is IAAF Veteran’s Pin
which he was awarded in Daegu during the IAAF Congress.
The afternoon was billed as a Tribute
to Chris Brown, who has competed for The Bahamas since 1997.
Chris holds both national records in
the 400m and 800m.
Last year he won the Gold medal in
the IAAF World Indoor 400m.
It was a great afternoon with David
Wallace returning as Master of Ceremonies.
