The UB Mingoes soccer team shares a moment with Mount Aloysius College Saturday August 25, 2018 in Cresson, Pennsylvania. The Mingoes lost to Mount Aloysius 3-0 and are now 0-0-1 on the season.

The UB Mingoes men’s soccer team opened the season with a 0-0 draw against Penn State Altoona and then a 3-0 loss to Mount Aloysius College.

The Mingoes ended in a 0-0 tie against Penn State Altoona Thursday in Altoona, Pennsylvania and then lost 3-0 against Mount Aloysius College Saturday in Cresson, Pennsylvania.

Head Coach Dion Godet says he was impressed with the side’s performance on Thursday against Altoona.

“We’re still in pre-season and have a lot of work to do still but it was a good effort and I think overall a win in our mind,” he said. “Small island met big budget this evening and we managed to get a draw out of the match. Altoona had more of the possession in the game but I think our team demonstrated a lot of will and a lot of heart. We fought down to the last minute and the last attacking play was in our favor but it didn’t go into goal.”

The coach was also impressed with the play of goalkeeper Michael Butler, who was recently name national team goalkeeper. “He kept the team alive and kept us in the game,” he added.

Looking at the 3-0 loss to Mount Aloysius College Coach Godet said he found many elements to build on heading into the season.

“I’m not disappointed with the effort of the team,” he said. “We seem to have a very strong team defending however we are challenged with finishing. In the second half of the match the team had a couple of open opportunities but we didn’t put them away. We’re going to get back to the drawing board 5:15 in the morning to get ready for our tour in Orlando next month.”

The UB Mingoes soccer team next plays Florida College 4pm September 14, 2018 in Orlando Florida.
