Voices” a documentary by Bahamian filmmaker Jeffrey Poitier, nephew of the famous Bahamian actor, Sir Sidney Poitier, premiered at the AMC Theater in the beautiful CocoWalk at Coconut Grove in October, 2008.
“Voices” documents the earliest untold stories of the Bahamian and African-American people who were the original settlers and builders of Coconut Grove in Florida.
Filmmaker Jeffrey Poitier, and his wife Ellie, spent four years interviewing some of the area's oldest early residents and the descendants of those who died.
In this exclusive phone interview with The Bahamas Weekly News Team you will hear from Poitier as he explains how the project came about, and also the plans they have for the future of the film which has over 640 hours of footage.
Also featured in this interview is Jeff's wife Ellie Poitier; actor and producer Michelle Rashida-Turner; and the film's music composer Steven Thompson. Thompson is a descendant of the Brady Rolle family of Bimini.
Poitier and his team wish for the documentary to be seen on TV throughout the world, and of course be seen within The Bahamas. The world premier took place at the
AMC Theater in CocoWalk, Coconut Grove on October 25th, 2008.
