Grand Bahama Island - On Monday, March 10th at the Grand Bahama Police Headquarters the Rotary Club of GB Sunrise were pleased to donated 101 bullet proof vests to local police officers. An initiative which began back in June 2008, the Rotary Club of GB Sunrise had set a goal to donate 75 vests, and were pleased to pass that goal.

In 2008, The Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce donated 23 vests that were custom sized and purchased after a police officer was killed. This was the spark that ignited the Rotary Club of GB Sunrise to do more.   The GB Sunrise Club planned an aggressive campaign to secure more vests for our local protectors.  Rotary wanted to show appreciation to the men and women in uniform.

During the week of June 30 through July 5, they campaigned the corporate and local community with fund raising, culminating on July 5 with their well attended Rib Fest.    The Rib Fest was an opportunity not only to showcase and display what the Police do to safeguard the community, but also to interest and encourage our young people to seek careers in law enforcement and fire safety.

In this video you will hear from James Sarles, President of Coldwell Banker James Sarles Realty, who is a member of the GB Sunrise Club and his business was a corporate sponsor of a vest. Also speaking is Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Marvin Dames, officer in charge of Grand Bahama; Ben Bell and Maitland Caites, campaign leaders from the GB Sunrise Club. Also speaking from the Sunrise Rotary Club is Jennivee Barr and Devincia Rahming who both worked tirelessly assisting with the Rib Fest and campaign.

The Rotary Club of GB Sunrise would like to thank all those that kindly donated to make this campaign a success. The vests will help the local police in their crime fighting efforts, and in turn this will benefit the entire community.
