NASSAU, Bahamas - Authorities in the Bahamas say a fire in a shantytown has killed at least two people and destroyed an estimated 50 homes, leaving hundreds of people homeless.

Assistant Police Commissioner Emerick Seymour says the fire began late Tuesday in the Marsh Harbour area in the Abaco Islands. It's an overcrowded community of permanent residents, naturalized citizens and Haitian migrants.

The government said it is helping those affected by the fire, and the cause is under investigation.

The Abaco Islands are about 180 miles (290 kilometres) east of Florida.
