Two Abaco male residents escaped unscathed from the forced ditching of their aircraft into the sea off West End, Grand Bahama, early Sunday evening (20.7.08).

It was around 6:30pm, when 52 yr old Clive Felix Ure of Sandy Point, took off from the Grand Bahama International Airport aboard his single engine, white and blue Piper Warrior aircraft r/n N444HA, accompanied by one passenger: Nicholas Miaoulis, 52 yrs and also from Sandy Point, en route to West Palm Beach, Florida.

Mr. Ure reported that when he got about one and a half miles out from Old Bahama Bay, West End, he heard a loud bang in the aircraft's engine, which failed immediately afterwards.

He stated that he turned the aircraft around and attempted to glide back to the West End Airport, but ending up ditching the plane into the ocean about 3/4 mile off West End.

Neither he nor Mr. Miaoulis sustained any injuries and were able to exit the airplane before it sank in the deep water.

After swimming towards West End for about five minutes, they were rescued by some residents of Old Bahama Bay, who took them into the marina, where they were met by Police, Customs and Immigration officials, who rendered assistance to them.

The Civil Aviation Department in New Providence will be investigating this accident.
