Bahamian fine art photographer, Winston D. Munnings has recently entered into a design collaboration with VIDA as one of its international designers. VIDA is a Google Ventures-backed fashion e-commerce platform that brings together designers and makers around the world to create original ladies apparel. The platform gives artists like Winston, the chance to convert their creative design vision into products like scarves, tops, and dresses.
“When the invitation was extended by VIDA’s Connie Kim, I knew right
away that my brand of photography would be a perfect fit for what that
company has in mind,” Winston said. Kim is a VIDA recruiter who said
that she came across Winston’s work on the internet and “absolutely love
what he was doing.” It was at that very moment the former print media
and broadcast Journalist was invited to become a VIDA designer.
“In addition to traditionally exhibiting my work in museums or at art festivals and the like, I’ve always wanted to see my images in this VIDA-like fashion and I am quite thrilled, actually, to be a part of this e-commerce initiative” he added. As a nature and wildlife photographer, the retired Bahamian Diplomat is an environmentalist and has traveled extensively in pursuit of his breathtaking images which can be seen on his website.
VIDA, based in California USA, is a 2014 upstart with a very unique perspective. Not only do they bring together Artists, Designers and Craftsmen from around the world to create original, stylish ladies’ apparel, but for every VIDA product made, the company offers literacy programs for the makers (in Karachi, Pakistan) of these products for example.
Reporting on VIDA roll out fifteen months ago, Sarah Perez a freelance writer with Tech Crunch wrote: “At launch, VIDA has over 75 products in two styles of 100% natural silk tops and three styles of scarves, including a micro-modal scarf and a cashmere blend scarf. Prices on the site range from $40 to $95 today, making the products affordable for its target demographic – urban, design-conscious women shoppers who are also mindful of their impact on the world.”
Munnings spent almost two decades in the diplomatic service and retired
in 1992. He formally studied his art form at the New York Institute of Photography
and at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderlade, Florida. His parents were from
Exuma and Cat Island, but he was born and grew up in
Nassau, where he attended Aquinas College, graduating in 1966. He worked as a news editor and anchor for TV / radio at the Nassau
Guardian, and was also a Nassau-based correspondent for UPI while
employed there.
