PARADISE ISLAND - Ninety-six players took part in the 16th Annual Duke of
Edinburgh Semi-Finals Charity Golf Tournament at Ocean Club Golf Course
this past Sunday (June 26th, 2016) in support of the Governor General’s
Youth Awards Programme.
With the help of major sponsors like
Bahamas Food Services, Tyreflex Motors, Graycliff, SunTee, Harbourside
Marine and John Bull; Atlantis was able to donate $45,000.00 to the
Governor General Youth Awards Program (GGYA). Over the last decade plus

Philip Major is the Male Singles Champion at Open National Playoffs Southern

Bahamian Philip Major dominates at the US Open National Playoffs Southern Sectional Qualifying Tournament
the finals match Philip faced home town favorite Trey Yates. Despite
the fact that the crowd was on American Yates side, Philip was able to
break serve and overpower Yates with a convincing victory of 6-4,6-2. In
an interview with Philip Major, he is quoted as saying "it is the small
things that count. I have worked on being better prepared on and off
the court. I have also worked on my mental game and how to better
position myself with a view to remaining positive." Major credits much of
his success to his new coach Jim Lavender. Philip said he will continue
to train and to prepare himself and plans to participate in another
tournament in the July...

Next stage will be in New Haven, Conn. right before U.S. Open
– JUNE 25, 2016 20-year old tennis professional, Philip Major, an
Andros native and now living in Nassau, earned early breaks in each set
as he defeated Trey Yates of Atlanta, Ga. 6-4, 6-2 in the men's singles
final of US Open National Playoffs Southern Sectional Qualifying
Tournament in Norcross, Ga. Major now advances to the US Open National
Playoffs Championships, held along with the Connecticut Open presented
by United Technologies, an Emirates Airline US Open Series event, in New
Haven, Conn., played just before the US Open. His opponent in the
finals, Yates,is a member of the University of Kentucky men's tennis
team and is from the Atlanta area...
Joanna Evans qualifies for the Olympics

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Texas rising sophomore Joanna Evans
won the 800-meter freestyle and eclipsed the FINA Olympic qualifying
standard to earn a spot on the Bahamian Olympic team Thursday evening at
the 2016 Bahamian National Championships.
Evans won the 800m
freestyle in 8 minutes, 32.19 seconds, well under the FINA "A" standard
of 8:33.97 for Olympic team qualification. The 2016 Big 12 Newcomer of
the Year, Evans needed to earn an Olympic qualifying time at the
Bahamian National Championships or the upcoming Caribbean Island
Swimming Championships to represent The Bahamas at the 2016 Olympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil...

Freeport, Grand Bahama native, Chavano Rainier "Buddy" Hield was the 6th
pick in the NBA draft on June 23rd selected by the New Orleans
Upon the announcement, Buddy hugged family members
before taking to the stage where he opened his jacket to reveal two sewn

NASSAU, Bahamas -- The 2nd annual Blue Marlin Track and Field Classic
will take place July 10, at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium from 4p.m. to
9p.m. During a press conference at the Stadium, Wednesday, June 22,
2016, Officials from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture said the
Classic, hosted by Network Security Consultant Group and sanctioned by
the BAAAs, is a new-age regional meet that will be held once a year.

In Pro USTA Women's Singles play, Bahamian Kerrie Cartwright was
successful in winning the tournament which was sponsored by Crow Canon
Country Club. The tournament which was classified as advanced, attracted
some top talent including Kerrie who was rated #1. Kerrie has
previously represented her country in Fed Cup action and has performed
exceptionally well. Her exceptional play has continued, which is quite
evident in this tournament. In this event, Kerrie received two byes and
then met Saltzen in the quarterfinals. Kerrie defeated her 6-3 7-5. She

Racers Grand Prix, in Kingston, Jamaica.
She broke the previous record of
22.14 which she held, also set in Jamaica in 2015.
Last week Miller took gold in the 400m in Oregon

Tennis Development Officer visits New Providence and Grand Bahama

Mr. John Goede, International Tennis Federation(ITF) Development Officer
for the Caribbean had a very fruitful visit to The Bahamas recently.
His visit encompassed not only New Providence but also Grand Bahama.
Mr. Goede met with the Grand Bahama Tennis Association (GBTA). The
focus was on the development of tennis and growth prospects with an
emphasis on school tennis clinics and advanced juniors clinic. Grand
Bahama has always produced really good tennis talent and in order to
continue this trend, development at the school and junior level is key.
Barrett, the president of GBTA is excited about Mr Goede’s presence. In
an interview she stated that “John's visit to Grand Bahama has been a
very beneficial one in that we were able to capitalise from his 35 years
of tennis experience and his passion for the game...
Philip Major Jr. and Justin Roberts In Top Form Tennis Play

From the tennis beat, we have a number of our outstanding tennis
athletes playing on the American Circuit. Over the weekend Philip Major
Jr. who made the main draw on the European Circuit a few months ago now
turns his attention to some US matchplay in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Philip along with fellow Bahamians Joshua Turnquest, Michael Cooper and
Iesha Shepherd participated in the Central Virginia Invitational Tennis
Tournament (CVITT). In the main draw, Philip defeated Eric S Collier 6-0
6-1. He then went on to defeat Christopher Vrabel 6-2 3-6 6-3. He
continued to blaze forward by winning over Jason T Kros, 4-6 6-3 6-1.
In the quarterfinals Philip lost to Maskim Tikhomirov 3-6,3-6. In women
singles match Iesha Shepherd played well and made it to the
quarterfinals but was defeated. Joshua Turnquest and Michael Cooper also

The Bahamas Swimming Federation is sending a National Swim Team to the
Good Will Games for the competition from 19 to 21 of August, 2016 in St.
Lucia. This is the XXII edition of the Goodwill Games swimming meet
held annually in one of 5 members countries in the Southern Caribbean.
Annually, each host country is allowed to invite a non-member country to
compete, and this is the second year the Bahamas has been invited to

6th Commonwealth Youth Games to be Hosted in The Bahamas in 2017

The launch of the 6th Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) preparation
commenced June 2nd with a press conference at the Media Center of the
Thomas A. Robinson Stadium. The event
which is 13 months away will be held in July 2017 and will host some
3,500 athletes, coaches, officials and press personal from 71 countries
in 9 sporting disciplines. It is expected than in excess of 1000
athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 will participate in the various
Sports disciplines competing in the games include
athletics, judo, swimming, cycling, beach volleyball, soccer, tennis

Bahamas' Shaunae Miller took gold in the 400m with another
incredible performance on May 29th at the Prefontaine Classic held at
Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Miller's time was 50.15
seconds, and behind her placing 2nd was American Francena McCorory with
50.23, and 3rd was American Natasha Hastings with 50.86 seconds.
Miller remains undefeated this year, and in April she ran her best 400m time of 49.70
at the Chris Brown Bahamas Invitational...
International Tennis Federation Development Officer Visits The Bahamas

The Bahamas Lawn and Tennis Association(BLTA) welcomes to The Bahamas
Mr. John Goede, International Tennis Federation(ITF) Development
Officer. Mr. Goede was appointed developmental Officer for the
Caribbean in May 2013. John has worked tirelessly on many projects for
the ITF and has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the region and
of tennis .
Mr. Goede has conducted many regional training camps
in the Caribbean. Since 2014, John has held numerous tennis clinics in
The Bahamas for children ages 10-16. During this time he has met with
parents to guide the direction of their children's tennis path and he
has also met with various executives to impart his knowledge on the
sport of tennis...
Bahamas Top Junior Female Tennis Athletes Partake in a High Performance Tennis Clinic

In an effort to provide top notched training for BLTA juniors, the
Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association extended an invitation to our top tennis
junior athletes to participate in a Developmental Clinic last week. The
Clinic focused on the development of some of our top female players.
The full week high-performance Clinic was facilitated by Coach Jim
Lavender of North Carolina. Emphasis was placed on shot selection,
doubles play and strategy. In attendance at the clinic were: Sydni
Kerr, Sydney Clarke, Sierra Donaldson and Afrika Smith, all of whom are
junior national team members.
The Clinic comes as a follow-up
to a developmental clinic held by the BLTA in December 2015 where
approximately 30 children participated. The focus of these clinics is
to develop the overall game of tennis athletes. Sierra Donaldson
represented The Bahamas in the recent Fed Cup and Junior Fed Cup events...

2016/2017 term its newly elected officers. At its recent annual
general meeting the following slate of officers and executives elected
were the President, Mr. Elwood Donaldson, 1st Vice President Mr. Omar
Smith 2nd Vice President Mr. Ceron Rolle, Treasurer Mr. Perry Newton
Jr., Assistant Treasurer Mr. Tim Danes, General Secretary Ms. Darnette
Weir and Assistant Secretary Mrs. Chilean Burrows. Council Members
selected were Mr. Lawrence Daxon, Mr. Brent Johnson, Ms. Autise
Mortimer, Mr. Terran Rodgers and Mr. Ivan Shepherd.
With the 2016
motto "All Hands On Deck" the Association encourages the involvement
