The  Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association(BLTA) ushers in for the 2016/2017 term its newly elected officers.  At its recent annual general meeting the following slate of officers and executives elected were  the  President, Mr. Elwood Donaldson, 1st Vice President Mr. Omar Smith 2nd Vice President Mr. Ceron Rolle, Treasurer Mr. Perry Newton Jr., Assistant Treasurer Mr. Tim Danes, General Secretary Ms. Darnette Weir and Assistant Secretary Mrs. Chilean Burrows.   Council Members selected were Mr. Lawrence Daxon, Mr. Brent Johnson, Ms. Autise Mortimer, Mr. Terran Rodgers and Mr. Ivan Shepherd.

With the 2016 motto "All Hands On Deck"  the Association encourages the involvement of all, Members, Corporate Bahamas and the Government as it seeks to elevate the sport of Tennis in The Bahamas...

The Bahamas will be participating in the Davis Cup in July 2016.  The Competition this year will be held in Bolivia.  The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association(BLTA)  held a tryout in December for the first two spots and is holding an invitational tryout next week June 3-5 to fill the final two spots.

(Matches begin at 9:00 a.m. round-robin format)...

Born in Nassau to Spanish Wells native Desiree Newbold Messier, oldest daughter of Philip (Pool) Newbold; and Canadian / Bahamian father Michael Messier, Lily Messier grew up in Spanish Wells until she was 10. She played baseball with the Divers Team from 2008-2010, and continued playing baseball when her family moved to Belleville Ontario Canada August 2010. There she played with the Belleville Bucks from 2011-2013.

"Lily took to everything cold and snow," said her mother Desiree. "She picked up skiing like she was born to it, and the same with ice skating." Lily accelerated in skating when she decided to play hockey in 2012 under skills and drills with Chris Longo, former NHL player. She joined the Stirling Boys House League Bantam hockey team in 2013 and played for 2 years...

Freeport, Bahamas -- Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, on Monday, May 23, made a cheque presentation on behalf of the Government to members of the Grand Bahama Regatta and Homecoming Committee at the Ministry. With the cheque in the amount of $9,000, the Minister appealed to corporate Grand Bahama to also step up and make contributions so that the event will be a success.

Grand Bahama Sailing Club Commemorates 10th Anniversary with Sloppy Sloop Regatta‏ - May 25, 2016 - 3:54:57 PM

The Grand Bahama Sailing Club is celebrating its 10th year anniversary and has decided to commemorate this milestone on May 28th 2016 with the Sloppy Sloop Regatta. The Regatta is a boat race consisting entirely with homemade rafts designed with recyclable materials.  Teams will have an opportunity to scull, paddle, row or sail their "sloops" through a ¼ mile course at the GB Sailing club, to be eligible to win the most coveted prizes such as the Diving Conch Trophy, the Ting 'em Trophy and the Conchy Joe Trophy, along with other awards and prizes.

The Regatta is a full day event, filled with exciting  pool games, water sports and endless activities; starting the day at 1pm and 'sailing' through the afternoon. The new Director of the club, Ross Darmody...

Nassau, Bahamas - The fifteenth annual Harbourside Marine Rotary Tuna Classic Fishing Tournament is set to take place on Friday June 3rd and Saturday June 4th. The event is a qualifier for the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) World Championships.

The tournament is put on jointly between Harbourside Marine and the Rotary Club of East Nassau. All proceeds from the event are used for community service projects. Locally such programs include food donations to needy residents of Fox Hill, the National Junior Sailing School, and the Bahamas Association for the Physically Disabled (BAPD). The funds also help support Rotary's worldwide effort to eradicate Polio, provide scholarships, and support of other international programs...

In partnership with the Bahamas Football Association, and presented by the Freeport Rugby Football Club and the Grand Bahama Girls Soccer Developmental League, local athletes, and parents are invited to an evening presentation by American, Hue Menzis on College Preparation.  Menzis' is the technical director of Jamaica’s Women’s National Team. This is a free presentation.

Rasheed Carey and Shannon Francis Making News in NJCAA Men’s Tennis National Championships - May 23, 2016 - 12:00:19 PM

College sophomores from The Bahamas Rasheed Carey and Shannon Francis played really well in the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association( NJCAA) Men's Division  National Championships.

Rasheed Carey’s team Asa Miami was able to win the national title in their program’s first year of NJCAA competition.  Rasheed a native of Freeport, Grand Bahama played well as the number 5 for his college but lost 4-6 3-6 and in doubles play Sophomore Rasheed continued to make his contribution along with teammate Zarazua but lost 3-6, 3-6. ASA Miami narrowly edged out the 45-point effort from runner-up Seminole State (Okla.) with a 47 point victory.  Asa Men "Silver Storms" have been crowned king of the courts. The College's women's team also won the NJCAA which speaks volumes for the tennis program at this college...

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis (BLTA) is proud to recognize the achievements of two of its young tennis athletes; namely Sydney Clarke and Anthony Burrows.  Sydney Clarke was selected as one of the faces for Club One Gym. Sydney was selected along with Olympian Ramon Miller to represent the establishment in its sports fitness campaign.  Club One wishes to combat the obesity problem with their upcoming fitness awareness promotions. Sydney is our No 1. junior national tennis player in the Girls’ 16s  Division.  She has been playing competitive tennis for many years and has performed exceptionally well over the years. Sydney has represented The Bahamas on several national teams.

Most recently Sydney was finalist in an International Tennis Federation (ITF) 14U tournament and semifinalist in 2015 JITIC 14U event, one of the top ITF junior...

Special Olympics Bahamas will hold its annual Track and Field Nationals on Saturday, May 28, at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium.

The event is expected to get underway with opening ceremonies at 9:30am with the “Parade of Athletes”,followed by the entrance of the games torch (Flame of Hope), brought into the stadium by the current class of recruits of the RBPF. The official opening will be performed by Min. of Social Services and Community Development - Hon. Melanie Griffin.

Over 55 athletes and coaches from Special Olympics programs in Abaco, Eleuthera and Grand Bahama will be in town to take part, joining over 60 athletes...

NASSAU, The Bahamas - Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Dr. Daniel Johnson officially opened the 33rd Annual Frank “Pancho” Rahming National Primary School Track and Field Championship on Wednesday, May 18, at the Thomas A. Robinson Sports Centre.  Minister Johnson announced at a press conference a week prior that this annual primary school track and field meet, organized by Frank “Pancho” Rahming for the past 33 years, would henceforth be named in Mr. Rahming’s honour.

The championship, which runs until Friday, May 20, are being held by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and sponsored by corporate entities...

Nassau, Bahamas - As a show of support for injured Olympian cyclist, Justin Minnis a group of cyclists in New Providence from the Bahamas Amateur Cycling Federation participated  in a special ride over the weekend.

Minnis was training on his bicycle on Tonique Williams Darling Highway on May 7th, and shortly after 6.00 a.m. in the vicinity west of the roundabout leading to the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre he was the victim of a ‘hit and run’ accident. He remains unconscious in critical condition at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Bahamian international beach soccer superstar Lesley St. Fleur scored his first goal playing for Lazio this week when the team squared off against No. 4 Tahiti during a friendly match leading up to the 10th edition Beach Soccer USA Cup which takes over Oceanside, Calif., this weekend.

The Lazio victory was the second big win this month for the player who also led Montego Bay United FC to the championship in Jamaica’s Red Stripe Premier League.

Nassau, Bahamas - Executives of The Bahamas Olympic Committee and The Bahamas Cycling Federation are appealing to the general public for information relating to the accident of aspiring Olympic cyclist Justin Minnis in the early hours of Saturday, 7th May, 2016. This weekend sees the Freeport Rugby Football Club's sixth Junior Rugby Festival and they will be hosting teams from Cayman, Key Biscayne, Bermuda and Nassau.

A full weekend of junior rugby games for 7yr old to 18 yrs old will be played from 9 am on Saturday until 6 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm. Also the Old Boys will be playing a game on Saturday at around 5 pm so it should be a fun weekend for the whole family.

Over 300 kids and adults will be visiting Freeport so please come out anytime over the weekend and enjoy this fantastic event.
