Huge Turnout For Atlantic Medical’s “Sweet 16” Funwalk - Apr 15, 2014 - 11:16:33 AM

Nassau, Bahamas – Oniel Williams, who has spent the last six months training in Kenya with Olympic champions and Mackey Williams, a runner who has been participating in marathons since 1986, were the first runner and walker to cross separate finish lines at Atlantic Medical’s 16th Annual Funwalk on Saturday.

The men were just two of 2,000 participants who turned out for the annual event, which brings awareness to chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes...

The 2014 IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport came to a close on 12 April, in Monaco. Dr. Rickey Davis represented the Bahamas Olympic Committee as Chair of its established Medical Commission.

The meetings, described by many delegates as the most constructive yet for researchers and practitioners in the field of sports medicine and prevention, were attended by a record 980 participants from 81 countries, and included 113 speakers, 5 keynote lectures, 24 symposia, 76 workshops and 202 abstracts; a remarkable increase at all levels from the last edition in 2011. The Conference was the second organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and was attended by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco...

Freeport, Bahamas - Four deserving kids at this year’s Grand Bahama soccer camp will be getting their sporting experience of a lifetime this August.

To mark the 10th year of the island’s best-supported summer camp, the English Premier League is going to treat the youngsters to an all-expenses-paid trip to Miami to watch two of the world’s best pro teams in action.

The two boys and two girls will be getting top-price tickets to the final of the Guinness International Champions Cup, a tournament being played between eight leading European clubs...

Nassau, Bahamas – The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Press Delegate and Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Director of Event Media Services are both pleased with the media set up as well as the overall development of the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.

The pair who gave two thumbs up, after completing a press site visit last week made the revelation during a press briefing which was held at the stadium.

“I am pleased with what I’ve seen. All the plans are really up to IAAF standards and we do have very high standards at the IAAF,” IAFF Press Delegate, Anna Legnai said...

Double-arm amputee puts in a 2.4 mile swim - 112 mile bike ride -  26.2 mile run in Grand Bahama

American paratriathlete, Hector Picard has returned back to the USA after spending a good week or so in The Bahamas where he participated in the Great Abaco Fitness Weekend and then led his own triathlon in Grand Bahama in aid of The Beacon School. The following are his own words recapping the event which took place last weekend in Freeport:

The Triathlon for the Beacon School was a complete success. I arrived on Grand Bahama island on the 24th and for 5 days I presented at various venues throughout the island that included churches, schools and support groups.  I inspired with my story, but more importantly I made those that attended, aware of The Beacon School and the special children there...

The officers and marines of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force hosted their Annual Fun Run Walk meet on March 31st. The month is declared their health and fitness month for the members of the Defence Force.  A variety of sporting activities were planned by the organization, culminating with the 3. 2 miles Fun Run Walk meet.

Rock Sound – the Eleuthera Junior Baseball League of Rock Sound played week #5 games in Rock Sound.

In game #1 - Tee Ball Division- the Tarpum Bay Nippers just nipped the Rook Sound Sea Grapes 18 to 17 in an excited match for the youngsters although the parents seemed to enjoy it more.

Then in game #2 Coach Pitch Division, the Spanish Wells Hook n’ Jook  out lasted the new comers Tarpum Bay Mosquitoes in their first game by the score of 13 to 11 The Tarpons promises to be the team that gives the Hook n’ Jook a run for the pennant.

In game #3 - Junior Division - the Rock Sound Stingrays doubled up the Spanish Wells Sting-Rays 8 to 4 to tie their series at 1-1...

Shaunae Miller advances to the 400m finals in Sopot - Mar 7, 2014 - 5:38:53 PM

SOPOT, Poland: Shaunae Miller had to work extra hard to get through her women's 400 metres  semifinal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships. She had to even wait a little longer than expected to see whether or not she got into the final.

Just by the skin of her teeth, she was was listed with the third and final spot by one tenth of a second over Russia's Kseniya Ryzhova. While Miller was timed in 51.63 seconds, Ryzhova did 51.64 for fourth. The IAAF World Youth and Junior champion can now relax a bit as she prepare for Friday's final at 1:40 pm in the Ergo Arena.
Bahamas' Paul De Souza qualifies for 2014 Youth Olympic Games - Mar 7, 2014 - 11:55:36 AM

Nassau, Bahamas - 14 year old St. Andrew's student, Paul de Souza, has joined a world class group of young sailors who have qualified their country for the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Nanjing, China, August 14-28, 2014.

In total, only 30 sailors worldwide will be selected through continental championships and the World championship to compete in the Youth Olympic Games. Paul trained very seriously for the North American Championships with his sailing coach, Robert Dunkley, from the Bahamas National Sailing School, and his fitness trainer, Emilio Bullard, from Sweat Therapy, to obtain one 
of the 4 North American qualifying spots.
The challenge of selecting teams for the IAAF World Relays - Mar 7, 2014 - 8:13:35 AM

Although the addition of the IAAF World Relays Championships has caused challenges for the selection of national teams, numerous federations have resorted to various options for solution.

Most national championships occur either at the end of June or during July after the World Relays Championships.

Only federations in the southern hemisphere like Australia and South Africa have their national championships prior to the World Relays.

An exception to this is Cuba, just miles south of The Bahamas. They always hold their national championships earlier than any other nation

Nassau, New Providence - The Bahamas Heart Association hosted their Annual Fun/ Run Walk on Saturday March 1, 2014. This event culminates Heart Month and was a great success. In the words of Tina Lightbourne, Vice President, "It was well attended. We were happy about the turn out".

It is also the event to start March, the month The Association host the March Appeal, encouraging people to become members of the Bahamas Heart Association. The proceeds from the membership dues are donated to The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation to help repair the hearts of children.

Saskatchewan, CANADA - Kenrick Hanna was as raw as a fresh-picked carrot when Brian Towriss saw him on a Saskatoon football field for the first time.

The Bahamas native, who attended high school in Florida before heading last year to a cold-weather province he'd never seen, needed plenty of work on a long list of football skills.

But he had one down pat - legs that flew faster than anything Griffiths Stadium had ever seen.

Nassau, Bahamas - Bahamas National Sailing School held their 2nd Annual Art Show at 1 er Cru (Premier Cru) on Gladstone Road on March 1st. 

The exhibiting artists were Malcolm Rae, Sonia Isaacs, Toby Lunn, Scott Aranha, Quentin Minnis, Judith Pavillion (from Andros), Jo Ann Bradley (from Abaco) and Robert Dunkley.

A generous percentage of sales were donated to the sailing school. The show is aimed at raising funds for the BNSS's junior sailing program and helping to send some of our top young sailors to represent The Bahamas at major international events...

Secondary school teachers got an introduction to scholastic wrestling recently in the first move to establish extracurricular wrestling in schools.

Physical Education teachers assigned to public schools learned the basics of scholastic wrestling in a one-day workshop conducted by the Bahamas Amateur Wrestling Federation. The teachers took part in the workshop as part of their ongoing professional development efforts...

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama…More athletic opportunities are lost because of poor attitudes than poor grades two veterans of the softball diamond emphasised young ladies of the Rising Stars Girls Softball Development League during the opening of their 2014 season at the Grand Bahama Softball Diamond this past weekend.

Dr Sophie Rolle-Smith and Ms. Candace deGregory-Clarke, both of whom have gone on to enjoy success after softball, encourage the school girls ages 7-18, some from as far away as West End, “To sleep eat, and drink softball because that is what we did and must maintain good grade averages to get those scholarships.”
Opti Valentine's Day Regatta showcases Bahamas Junior Sailors - Feb 27, 2014 - 1:29:28 PM

This year the Bahamas Sloop Association, spearheaded by Eleazor Johnson, again invited the Bahamas National Sailing School’s junior sailors to join them in their Valentine’s Day Regatta that took place last weekend, February 15. It was a great opportunity for them to be with the “big boys” to show off their sailing skills. Our juniors are kids ages 8 to 16 who come from a variety of social backgrounds with just one thing in mind – SAILING.

The youngsters raced around a very short but fun course close to the Montagu Beach shore. As one of the spectators commented, “It is amazing to see such young sailors handling these boats so well“ and for many who don’t know about the junior sailing program, this would be a surprise...
