24 Schools to Compete in the 37th Track & Field Bahamas Public Primary School Championship Meet

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The New Providence
Public Primary Schools Sports Association (NPPPSSA) will host its 37th
Annual Track and Field Championship meet for public primary schools from
Wednesday, May 27th to Friday, May 29th at the Thomas A. Robinson Track
and Field Stadium.
Plans for the meet were announced during a
press conference at the Ministry of Education Science and Technology on
Friday, May 22. Joel Lewis, Acting Deputy Director of Education, along
with representatives of the NPPPSSA were in attendance including Dawn
Knowles, Senior Education Officer, Primary Physical Education; Louise
Forbes, Sports Administrator, Student Services Division; Cedricka Rolle,
Assistant Treasurer and Clara Storr, Board Member.

Nassau, Bahamas – The spirit of relays came
to the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, on May 2nd and May
3rd as the venue hosted the second edition of the IAAF World Relays.
700 athletes, coaches and officials represented 43 countries in ten
relays – during the two days of competition at the IAAF/BTC World Relays

This year’s Grand Bahama soccer camp will field the most
highly-qualified team of visiting coaches in the annual event’s 11-year
The trio from the UK all have professional level coaching
licenses and have then gone on to successfully complete further programmes
aimed at making them particularly skilled in working with young people. In the process they learned how to blend
high-level teaching with making kids have fun.

Smokey’s Karate School aims for US Open with Help from BTC

Nassau, Bahamas - A year ago,
Smokey’s Karate School (SKS) a martial arts academy in Englerston, was in
danger of closing its doors due to a lack of safety flooring. Today, thanks to
assistance from its ongoing sponsor BTC, the academy is thriving and has its
sights set on sending students to the International Sport Karate Association’s US
Open Martial Arts Championship in Florida, July 3rd and 4th.
Last year, BTC answered
a plea for assistance from the school and donated new carpeting and tumbling mats
after concerns were expressed about the safety of the children and the
noise-level in the business complex where the school is located. More recently,
BTC helped them with the purchase of a van for transporting the students to

Tourism, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe on Wednesday encouraged students of
Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy to strive to be their best during a
special Awards Celebration recognizing the students for their
accomplishments this academic year.
Held under the theme, "Strive
for Excellence," the Minister gave examples of Bahamian greats who
overcame obstacles and are well-known in their chosen professions. Two
examples he gave were Sir Sidney Poitier, who started in New York
washing dishes and was taught by a Jewish friend to read -- today, the
well-known actor is also directing films and writing books; and Andre
Rodgers, who was a cricket player but became the first Bahamian to play

ESPN Events Acquires Popeyes Bahamas Bowl

The Popeyes Bahamas Bowl has been acquired by ESPN Events, a
subsidiary of ESPN. The second Popeyes Bahamas Bowl will be played at Nassau's
Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium on
Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015, showcasing schools
from Conference USA and the Mid-American Conference.
The bowl was acquired from Bahamas Bowl, LLC,
which owned the inaugural game in 2014.
“We are excited to be adding the Popeyes
Bahamas Bowl to our portfolio of events,” said Pete Derzis, senior vice
president, ESPN Events.

Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world has been captured on canvas doing his
famous winning pose by Bahamian Jamaal Rolle, The Celebrity Artist. The
portrait was presented to Bolt after his appearance at the IAAF World
Relays which were held for the second time in Nassau, Bahamas.
The Celebrity Artist
is famous for his life-like portrait depictions of political,

Annual JKR Gasshuku Training Seminars and International Tournament, in Anaheim,
California, April 30 – May 4, 2015.
The highlight of the event was the advanced
training seminars with JKR instructors out of Japan. The students were also exposed
to training with other JKR students from around the world. Knowles finished with a

US Win Men’s 4x800 Relays; Kenyans Disqualified

Bahamas -- The United States Men’s 4x800 Metres team came out on top, beating
out the Kenyans, who were disqualified in one of the much-anticipated races
during the IAAF/BTC World Relays Bahamas 2015.
May 2, the result was a surprise to the thousands of spectators who filled the
Thomas A Robinson National Stadium and to the Kenyans themselves, known for
their long distance prowess on the track.
