Bahamians Gardiner and Thomas Compete at Athletissima 2016 in Lausanne, Switzerland - Aug 26, 2016 - 3:51:11 PM

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Two Bahamian athletes competed in the ‘Athletissima 2016’ meet in Lausanne, Switzerland held Thursday, 25 August, 2016 placing second and sixth in their events. Stephen Gardiner placed second in the men's 400 m while Donald Thomas placed sixth in the high jump.

Athletissima is an annual international competition sponsored by the IAAF Diamond League.

On hand to support the athletes were the Ambassador/Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to The United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva...
Bahamas at 12U ITF/GSDF Caribbean Tennis Team Championships in Curacao - Aug 26, 2016 - 12:07:16 PM

The  Bahamas has a tennis team participating in the 12U ITF/GSDF Caribbean Team Championships in Curacao.    The team consists of the Boys: Michael Major Jr. and Anthony Burrows Jr and on  the Girls' side, Genesis Missick of Freeport, Grand Bahama and Kaylee Kanuka.  Our team captain is  Coach Ricardo Demeritte. The competition's format is round-robin play in the qualifying round with both a singles and doubles match everyday.  .  The top three (3) nations in this tournament will advance to the Masters Event in Mexico in November.
This 12U Team Championships began in 2013.  In this year of introduction both our Boys' and Girls' Teams won the gold!  So far in tournament play the Boys Team of Anthony and Michael have advanced to the main draw with a win over Guyana 3-0...

Bahamian Olympic finalist Trevor Barry is already on the road to the IAAF World Championships in London next August.

“It’s all one step, or in this case one leap, at a time,” says Barry, one of three Bahamian high jumpers to qualify for the Rio Olympics. He returns to Nassau after the Olympics to train again with his legendary coach, Keith Parker, starting their world championship medal campaign. He already holds a bronze world medal from Daegu 2011.

Barry finished 11th in the Rio high jump final with 2.25 M, after qualifying with a season’s best jump of 2.29 meters...

The Bahamas defeated the United States of America for the first time in the country’s soccer history.

The Bahamas Beach Soccer Team scored the historic win against the #15 ranked USA men’s national team in a nail biting match in Spiez, Switzerland on Saturday.

It was a close match up, but The Bahamas came out on top, defeating the soccer powerhouse by one point with a final score of 5-4...

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Claiming the country's second medal and a season best, Bahamas' men's 4 x 400m relay team of Chris Brown, Steven Gardiner, Alonzo Russeel and Michael Mathieus are taking home a bronze from the 2016 Olympic games after a valiant performance, and a time of 2:58.49 on Saturday night.

They were behind the USA who claimed the gold with a time of 2:57.30;  and in second was Jamaica with silver at a time of 2:58.16.

Finals Champion, Semifinal Win and Quarterfinal Appearances and Main Draw Wins were the positive results achieved by a group of The Bahamas top U18 Tennis Juniors who recently participated in the International Tennis Federation(ITF) Tournaments.

The result from this young and talented group is to be applauded as many of them travelled for the first time to these countries to showcase their talent on the international stage.    The Bahamain travelling group consisted of Donte Armbrister, Gabriela Donaldson, Sierra Donaldson, Sydney Clarke, Afrika Smith and Sydni Kerr. It was a thrilling 4 X 400 m relay race in Rio as The Bahamas maintained a lead for most of the event, and slipped back to third in the final leg. Their time of 2:59.64 was a season's best for the team.

Great Britain was disqualified moving The Bahamas up to second place in that heat.

BRAZIL -- Bahamian sprinter Shaunae Miller collected the first medal for The Bahamas at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Monday, August 15th in the 400 m.

The race is causing quite the stir as Miller dived across the finish line to take gold and beat out USA's Allyson Felix's time of 49.51; and Jamaica's Shericka Jackson with 49.85.  Miller's time was 49.44 (a personal best), edged out Felix by a mere 0.07 seconds. 

Her dive, which is being talked up and memed on social media was perfectly legal as   Miller's torso crossed the finish line first, making her the clear winner according to the International Association of Athletic Federations rulebook...

Freeport, Bahamas - The Grand Bahama Cyclist's Club will host their 3rd Annual Time Trial Championships will take place on  Saturday, October 1st, 2016 at 8:00am near the airport roundabout on the Grand Bahama Highway.

The 12th Annual Grand Bahama Road Cycling Championship will run on holiday Sunday, October 2nd at 8:00am near the airport roundabout. "This is considered the Grand Showdown with two former Grand Bahama Road Cycling Champions," said Rowshan Jones of the Club, "The two most recent national champions as well as national team members Anthony Colebrooke and Jay Major will go head to head for the first time in over 3 years."

D-Squad Basketball Camp, now in its 11th year, has recently completed another excellent summer planting the seeds of peace, thanks in part to dedicated volunteers and generous donors such as Consolidated Water Company (CWCO). CWCO, a recurring sponsor of the camp, has again donated funds to assist camp Founder Harcourt McCoy in using basketball as a vehicle to teach discipline, comradery, and conflict resolution to children of all backgrounds.

The camp, which accepts children ages 5 through 19, hosted 101 kids over its three weeks, many of which were admitted free of charge from the surrounding neighbourhoods of the A.F. Adderley gymnasium where the camp is held...
