Australian finishes record swim between Eleuthera and New Providence - Oct 22, 2014 - 3:48:48 PM

Bahamian team from The Island School supports marathon swimmer

NASSAU, Bahamas –  She's done it!  After departing from Eleuthera on Tuesday morning, 29 year old Australian swimmer Chloe McCardel has successfully completed a 78-mile swim from Eleuthera to Nassau, New Providence.  She reached Nassau around 1am on Wednesday, October 22nd.

According to her team this is the longest continuous marathon swim in history. The open-water solo took 42.5 hours.

McCardel made the trek under Marathon Swimmers Federation rules, which meant she was not allowed to intentionally touch her support boat or hold on to anything.

Nassau, New Providence - For the second consecutive year, Sports World Ministry is bringing its Go Positive Tour to the Bahamas.

This year, the Go Positive Tour will be back from October 27-30 and representing Sports World will be Michael Cobb, a graduate of Michigan State University who was drafted in the NFL in the first round in 1977 by the Cincinnati Bengals, but went on to play for the Chicago Bears (1977-81) and then in the United States Florida League with the Michigan Panthers (1983-84) and the Birmingham Stallions (1984-85)...

ELEUTHERA, Bahamas - Chloe McCardel an Australian endurance athlete this morning began her world-record attempt at swimming 128-kilometer (about 80-miles) in the open waters of the Bahamas.

She left from the island of Eleuthera and hopes to finish some 48 hours later in Nassau.

"Everyone at the Island School have been amazing!" the 29-year-old athlete from Melbourne wrote on her Facebook page.  "Teaching and non - teaching staff, interns, students! Look what the students made Me!"

Nassau (Bahamas) - It is with great pleasure that the Star Sailors League announces that two more top Brazilian sailors will be joining the fleet of 20 super-champions taking part in the SSL Finals 2014 being held for the second consecutive year at Nassau Yacht Club in the Bahamas between December 1st and 7th.

2013 winner Robert Scheidt and new entry Marcelo Fuchs, 12th in the Skipper Ranking, will now be flanked by two highly prestigious wildcards from the Brazilian and international sailing scene.

Nassau, New Providence - The Bahamas Football Association today announced the results of its October 19, 2014 Congress. The Member Clubs voted on all open positions on the Executive Committee.

CANOC convened its 12 General Assembly on Friday 17 October at the Hilton Hotel in Barbados. The report of the Executive was readily delivered by the outgoing Secretary General, Mr Elton Prescott, while Messrs Angel Morales and Keith Joseph delivered the report of the CANOC Education and Training Commission (CEATC) which highlighted the successful conduct of two courses organised by the CEATC and sponsored by Commonwealth Games Canada and six sponsored by the Organising Committee of the Pan American Games of 2015 (TO2015).

The General Assembly also received updates on TO2015, Rio2016, the Bid Committees for the Commonwealth Games 2022 from Durban, South Africa and Edmonton, Canada...

Freeport, Bahamas - The Grand Bahama Darts Association help their Annual General Meeting on August 19th,2014. The 2014-2015 season was opened October 7th, 2014 at which time a new slate of officers was elected.

Information about upcoming registration and the upcoming commencement of the new season will be announced soon.

Bahamas Judo Athletes to Debut at the World Junior Championships - Oct 16, 2014 - 10:27:54 PM

“Whoever wins this tournament will be the Champion of the World.” said
Tim Munnings, Director of Sports and Olympic Medalist.  He delivered a motivating message of belonging to the eight young athletes who will be representing the Bahamas at the Judo World Junior Championships. The tournament will be held in Miami later this week. The team is comprised of national champions who have all won international matches and medals against high level opponents.

The team is coached by D’Arcy Rahming Jr. who is the only Bahamian to have fought in a previous Junior World Championships in 2007. Rahming is a second degree Black and a certified coach by Semmelweis University in Hungary. “The team has prepared using world class standards and the best technology. I am particularly delighted that three of the eight athletes are from Abaco and one other athlete was recruited out of the College..."

Grand Bahama Tennis & Squash Club to host U.S. instructors in upcoming skills clinic - Oct 16, 2014 - 5:08:11 PM

Freeport, Bahamas - E arlier this year The Grand Bahama Tennis & Squash Club (GBTSC) held a successful junior squash clinic which ran for two months, introducing the game to over 23 young players, many of whom continue to play regularly every Saturday morning.

The Club now aims to expand its outreach with an upcoming squash skills training weekend slated for juniors on Saturday, November 8th and Sunday, November 9th for adults at 10am each day.

The event will boast a special guest coach from the USA, Wendy Bartlett, 30 year veteran Women’s Head Squash Coach at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, one of the top three college teams in the USA.

The Baptist Sports Council will hold a joint meeting on Saturday at 10 am at the Jordan Prince Williams Baptist College for all Churches interested in participating in the 2014 Track and Field and Softball Classic. All interested Churches are requested to have two members represent.

The track and field classic, sponsored by Rubis Bahamas Limited and Buttons Formal Wear, is set for Saturday, November 1 at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium. It will feature competition in the men and women 5-and-under, 10-and-under, 15-and-under, 20-and-under, open and masters divisions.

The Grand Bahama Girls’ Developmental Soccer League sponsored forty coaches from Grand Bahama for a three day coaching course from September 23- 25, 2014. Participating coaches were awarded two qualifications,  Level 1 and Level 2 National Coaches Soccer Association (NSCAA) diplomas.

The Level 1 Diploma is designed to help coaches implement developmentally appropriate training games to improve skill levels in a fun and safe environment.  The diploma has three parts, classroom with theory of coaching U6-U8; field work with coaches; and field work with U6-U8 players. Coaches not working at this age group still benefited greatly from an appreciation of the developmental abilities and needs of this important age group...

Scores of professional volleyball players and fanatic fans from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida took over the beach at SuperClubs Breezes for an action-packed volleyball tournament September 26-28th.

Dig The Beach Volleyball Series was founded in 1991 and is the longest standing and largest volleyball series in the United States.

Dig The Beach Representative Diogo Sousa said that the series group is aggressively trying to expand overseas and The Bahamas is the first stop. “The beach, the sand, the view, the people and the weather. Why would we not choose The Bahamas,” said Sousa.

“I’ve played all over the world and nothing can compare to The Bahamas. It’s great people, great weather, and all of that makes for a better game,” says pro-volleyball player Neil Mayo.

The participants truly enjoyed themselves with competitive volleyball matches in the sand, dancing, delicious food and drinks at the all-inclusive resort, but the fun did not stop there...

Joanna Evans, a distance freestyler from The Bahamas, has made a verbal commitment to the University of Texas beginning with the 2015-16 season.

Evan represented The Bahamas at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing this past summer. She was the bronze medalist in the 800m free with 8:39.75. She went into the meet with a seed time of 8:57 from Charlotte Grand Prix in February. In the 400m free, Evans dropped more than five seconds to finish fifth with 4:12.14. She was only 9/10 behind gold medalist Hannah Moore of the USA and 2.9 seconds ahead of the sixth-place finisher.

Freeport, Grand Bahama – Bernard Davis, a member of The Bahamas Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation will represent The Bahamas in the Central American Championships (CAC) being held in St. Marten slated for early October. Mr. Davis, deemed as Mr. Bahamas 2014 has received a donation from The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) to compete in the upcoming event.

Pleased to receive the contribution, Mr. Davis said, “I am appreciative of GBPA's sponsorship and support in my bodybuilding career.  I do consider body building as much like other sports, in that in order to be successful you must dedicate yourself 100% to your training, diet and mental approach."
Bahamas Anglican Churches to Hold 4th Annual Track & Field this Saturday - Oct 2, 2014 - 1:42:02 PM

The Anglican churches of the Northern Archdeaconry will hold their 4th Annual Track & Field meet this coming Saturday, October 4 at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex. The 10 parishes which comprise the archdeaconry include congregations from Abaco, Bimini and the 7 churches in Grand Bahama.

The meet is designed to maximize the participation of all members of the parish and events are scheduled for competitors ranging from pre-school age to persons who are considered young-at-heart and are in their 50s, 60s and even older. Additionally, there are “fun” events planned which include the traditional “egg & spoon” and three-legged races. Events for “co-ed” or mixed teams are also on the line-up; members of the Vestry will have their exclusive category and of course, there is the ever popular Clergy race which tends to be more entertaining than any of the other specialty events...
