Mixed Relay Event New to World Relays Schedule - Feb 18, 2017 - 9:07:21 AM

Organizers of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Relays Bahamas 2017 are hopeful that the newest feature on the schedule will garner a lot of interest, and create a lot of excitement, building on the momentum it gained from its inaugural run at the world youth championships two years ago.

The mixed 4x400 meters (m) relay is being introduced on the senior level, and will be ran at this year’s IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017, replacing the distance medley events. The IAAF World Relays is set for April 22-23...

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture held a press conference on Wednesday, February 15, at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium to make the public aware of, and garner support for, Team Bahamas in its quest for first place at the 2017 CARIFTA Games.  Coaches say their participants are ready to propel the country to the number 1 spot. 

CARIFTA Judo will take place April 5-9 at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium; CARIFTA Water Polo will be held April 7-9 at the Betty Kelly Kenning Swim Complex; CARIFTA Swimming, April 15-19 at the Betty Kelly Kenning Swim Complex and CARIFTA Track and Field in Curacao, April 14-16... 
Bahamian Gymnasts Take a Big Bite in the “Big Apple” - Feb 17, 2017 - 9:53:42 AM

The “Big Apple” felt a big bite from a small squad of gymnasts who competed in the 2017 Manhattan Classic over the weekend of January 28. The team, sponsored by Bahamas Star Gymnastics and Bahamas Gymnastics Parents Booster Club, filled a tall order to test out a competitive meet for the first time and left proof of their participation in the score books. Level 1’s Krismerlyn Nixon and Malia Strachan teamed up with Level 2’s Aemerie Curry and Level 3’s Rhianna Smith and Taevia Wright to endure the nipping winds of Manhattan in exchange for nipping other competitors on the medal podium. The Level 1 team duo of Nixon and Strachan tied for first place All Around with a score of 37.025 (of 40) and medaled on all four apparatus. Nixon secured first place finishes on uneven bars and balance beam with Strachan taking the lead for first place on vault and floor exercise...

Brazil, Paraguay and Ecuador are Bahamas bound having secured their spots in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 at the CONMEBOL Qualifier Asuncion in Paraguay over the weekend.

Officials from the International Association of Athletics Federation conducted a walk-through of the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium on Thursday where the IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017 will be held April 22 – April 23. IAAF officials have established that IAAF “Established Practices and Approved Guidelines” are being adhered to.

The Local Organizing Committee held a press conference recently to update the media and The Bahamas on preparations for IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017.

7th annual Grand Bahama Open set to tee off March 4th & 5th - Feb 11, 2017 - 8:26:17 PM

On Thursday, February 9th, the Northern Region of the Bahamas Golf Federation held a press conference to announce the 7th Annual Grand Bahama Open Golf Tournament, March 4th – 5th, 2017 at the Lucayan Reef Golf Course.

The event, which was initially scheduled for October of 2016, was rescheduled due to the passage of Hurricane Matthew at the beginning of October.

As Grand Bahama Island is no novice to professional golf, local organizers are optimistic of the continued partnership with the Ministry of Tourism (title sponsor)...

On Thursday, February 9th, the Ministry of Tourism held a Welcome Reception for the participants of this year’s 3rd Annual Blue Marlin Cove Wahoo Classic, scheduled for February 9th – 11th, 2017.

There were a total of 22 boats scheduled participate in this year’s tournament, however due to inclement weather, 13 boats sailed into the Marina with eager anglers, ready to compete in the three-day event, and raise funds for the West End Eco Camp.

Manager for Sports Tourism, Nuvolari Chootosingh, explained that the host property, Blue Marline Cove, is running at full occupancy this weekend, despite the cancellation of some of this year’s expected participants...

The Grand Bahama American Women’s Club is hosting the 14th Annual Philanthropic Golf Classic at The Reef Golf Course February 18th. All proceeds from the tournament fund the club’s philanthropic endeavors to benefit the children of Grand Bahama.

Grand Bahama School Teams Given Volleyball Jerseys - Feb 8, 2017 - 11:09:57 AM

Freeport Restaurant Company Ltd. donated team jerseys to four volleyball teams at the Ministry for Grand Bahama on Monday, February 6, 2017.

The presentation was made for the senior boys and girls of Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy, Eight Mile Rock High girls, and Jack Hayward High boys. These teams were the winners of the Grand Bahama Secondary Schools Athletic Association Championships in December.

Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville noted that "Grand Bahama is a leader when it comes to developing and producing the most skilled and talented individuals in the area of sports..."
Volunteers Ready for IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017 - Feb 6, 2017 - 9:10:39 PM

A major sporting event such as the IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017 can only be successful with the integration of volunteers. For this year’s event the LOC is expecting more than 800 volunteers who will give of their time and talent to make the 2017 edition the best edition of the world event.

The hundreds of volunteers have been busy ironing out the logistical details for the relays including accreditation, attachés, translators, helpers and the like.

“An event of this magnitude just doesn’t happen,” IAAF World Relays Communication Director, Jerome Sawyer said. “It is an intricate dance where many different partners and volunteers are a major participant in this dance. Without them we can’t have a successful event...”

Sergio Garcia lifted the Omega Dubai Desert Classic trophy as he sealed his 12th European Tour win with a three shot victory over Open Champion Henrik Stenson taking a $2,650,000 prize.

he countdown has begun for the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament taking place in Grand Bahama, April 20-23, 2017.

Some 300 persons are expected to participate in the event, which combines big game fishing with kayaking for a $10,000 prize and experience of a lifetime in the pristine waters of The Bahamas.

IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017 Tickets Now Available - Jan 31, 2017 - 10:56:25 AM

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of The IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017 today released ticket prices for the third edition of the event set for April 22-23, 2017 at The Thomas A Robinson National Stadium.

Single session tickets range from 15 dollars to 70 dollars and can be purchased at the stadium or online. The ticket prices for general admission is 15 dollars, silver is 40 dollars, bronze is 50 dollars and the gold section is priced at 70 dollars.

Thirteen local young golf enthusiasts will take to the greens this year as part of the Junior Golf Scholarship Programme at Ocean Club Golf Course (OCGC). Brittany Lincicome, who had struggled in playoffs throughout her career, birdied the first extra hole on Sunday at the Ocean Club Golf Course and defeated fellow American Lexi Thompson to win the $1.4 million Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic.

Lincicome two-putted from 20 feet at the par-5 18th hole and then watched as Thompson missed a tying birdie try from 12 feet. It was Lincicome’s seventh LPGA victory and she won for just the third time in 11 career playoffs. Thompson, who held a share of the 54-hole lead with Stacy Lewis, lost in her first playoff appearance...

Seeking her first victory since 2014, Stacy Lewis finished birdie-eagle Saturday at the Ocean Club Golf Course and jumped into a tie for the lead with Lexi Thompson after 54 holes of the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic. The two players finished at 23-under-par 196 with Lewis carding a 10-under 63 and Thompson, after a record 61 on Friday, coming back with a 7-under 66.

Both players shattered the 54-hole tournament mark of 204 set by Na Yeon Choi in 2014, and they came up one stroke shy of the LPGA record of 24-under by Annika Sorenstam in the 2003 Mizuno Classic at Seta Golf Course in Otsu-shi, Shiga, Japan.
