Bahamas to Host IAAF World Relays April 22 and April 23

The Bahamas will host the IAAF World Relays on April 22 and April 23 at
the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium where world classed athletes
will compete for the coveted Golden Baton.
The World Relays,
governed by the International Association of Athletics Federation
(IAAF), will feature some of the best track athletes in the world
including recent medallists from the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. The IAAF was founded on July 17, 1912 by seventeen
national athletics federations as the International Amateur Athletics

The countdown is officially on! With just under 100-days to the start of
the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017, members of the Local
Organizing Committee said the new stadium will be ready to host
thousands of local and international spectators.
During a tour of
the construction site for the state-of-the-art beach soccer facility to
mark the 100-day milestone on Tuesday, Bahamas Football Association
President Anton Sealey predicted that The Bahamas would host the most

Today marks 100 days until the kick off of the FIFA Beach Soccer World
Cup Bahamas 2017, and excitement continues to grow as the city of Nassau
prepares to host the country’s biggest sporting event to date.

Christie, other Bahamas government officials and members of the media
will tour the new beach soccer stadium, which is nearing completion.

Mr. Cyril Jervis, President of Bahamas Association of Chicago,
facilitated a post-game meet and greet with Bahamian basketball
sensation Buddy Hield at the Chicago Bulls vs. New Orleans Pelicans game
at the United Center, January 14, 2017.
Bahamians from the
Midwest jurisdiction came out to support their countryman and present a
plaque honoring Hield as an modern example of Bahamian excellence,
celebrating his first appearance in Chicago as an NBA player...
Massachusetts Man Wins 8th Annual Sunshine Insurance Marathon Bahamas

A Northampton, Massachusetts man who has competed in 100 ultramarathons,
breezed past his competitors Sunday to win the 8th annual Sunshine
Insurance Marathon Bahamas (SIMB).
Leigh Schmit, 44, finished with a time of 2:52:21.
Schmit said he has run 20 marathons so far.
“I did this (Marathon Bahamas) two years ago and I had bad cramps. Now,
I’m pretty much acclimated to the heat,” said Schmit who lives in

Hyo Joo Kim came to the fourth annual Pure
Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic last January just hoping to begin the year
with a top-10 finish. She succeeded – by finishing first.
closing 7-under-par 66 at the Ocean Club Golf Course at Atlantis Resort,
Kim beat the 2015 champion, Sei Young Kim, Anna Nordqvist and Stacy
Lewis by two strokes for her third LPGA title. Twenty years old at the
time of the win, Kim, of Kangwon-do, South Korea, finished with an
18-under 274 total to pocket $210,000 and 500 CME Globe points...
132 golfers attend inugural Bahamas Great Exuma Classic

The Islands of The Bahamas once again captivated millions of spectators
as 132 professional golfers from around the world duked it out for the
first ever Bahamas Great Exuma Classic.
The event, which kicked
off the Professional Golf Association’s (PGA) 2017 Web.com Tour, was
held at Sandals Emerald Bay, Exuma January 8-11.
In the end, it was veteran Kyle Thompson who took home a prize of $108,000. It was his fifth time winning a Web.com tournament...
3rd annual Tour de Grand Bahama dates announced

The 2017 Sports Tourism season will glide into action with the 3rd
Annual Tour De Grand Bahama cycling event, scheduled to take place on
February 4th and 5th.
During a press conference held on Friday,
January 6, 2017, President of the Grand Bahama Cyclist Club, Mr. Kenton
Roker said that the purpose of the event was to raise funds to support
the less fortunate, with the charitable organization being Operation
Mr. Roker said that it was out of the club’s
desire to give back that they decided to turn their act of charity into a
major cycling event for the island of Grand Bahama.
New to the event this year is a corporate challenge...
Bahamas vs. USA for the Deltec Trophy

The Bahamas and USA tennis teams both came through Thursday
with wins over Canada and The International team respectively. This
sets up the much anticipated Final match up between these two unbeaten
is Friday at The National Tennis Centre starting at 9.30 am.
As both USA and Bahamas are unbeaten this final match will decide the
winner of The Deltec Trophy and the fourth bi-annual Bahamas IC
International Tennis Doubles Week. At the previous event two
years ago The USA won a close match with The Bahamas who had to settle
for second place. Bahamas IC President, Kit Spencer said “
it will be a tough match but we do have a strong team that will be doing it’s very best to go one better than two years ago...”
Dates announced for 2017 Sir Jack Hayward Soccer Camp

The Freeport Rugby Football Club in Grand Bahama has
announced the dates for the Sir Jack Hayward Soccer Camp. The annual
kids favourite will be held on June 19 to June 23, 2017.
"The club is very conscious of the devastating effect Hurricane Matthew
had on our community and so we have decided to slash the price from $175
to $100 per camper," said a press statement issued by the club
president, Rob Speller. "Please look at this as
a minimum donation
the club remains very reliant on funds raised from this event to
maintain the clubhouse and pitches so they are available year-round at a
minimum cost to our junior and senior members..."
Sands runners pitted against each other in Marathon Bahamas

The Sands Hash House Harriers
will have two relay teams in the Marathon Bahamas event this Sunday.
Because the teams of three males and one female don't qualify for the
official marathon categories (all M or all F, or 2M and 2F) the teams
will be competing against each other.
your favorite team when you see them along the race route sporting
their "Sands Beer Jet Packs." One team is Sands and the other is Sands
Pink Radler. You are welcome to stop by their tent which will be set up
near the finish line. Look for the "Nassau Hash

Charity Marathon Training Team to Run Marathon Bahamas

Twenty-one Strides for Hope members will be traveling to The Bahamas to
participate in the 8th annual Sunshine Insurance Marathon Bahamas
The event will be held on Sunday, January 15th beginning at Junkanoo Beach.
Strides for Hope is a charity marathon training team. Participants raise
money for the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Abor (CSC).
In exchange, participants receive a training program to help them prepare to participate in a half-marathon.
Members of the Strides for Hope team participate in honour or memory of someone they know who has been touched by cancer...

The Bahamas began its quest for The Deltec Trophy at The fourth
bi-annual IC International Tennis Week being held at The National Tennis
Centre with a 5-0 victory over Barbados. While a comfortable victory
there were several very close matches. The Bahamas men’s doubles team
of John Antonas with Guillame Bouffard had a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ian
Gentle and Leo Rolle. Neil Mactaggart with Mas Kimball recorded a win of
6-2, 6-2 over Peter Symmonds and Raymonde Forde. The ladies doubles
team of Kim O’Kelley and Sue Kimball also came through but with a close
second set 6-1, 7-6 over Marie Gentle and Julie Salomon to give The
Bahamas a winning 3-0 lead. However in the two mixed doubles that
followed both were very close with The Bahamas just making it in both
matches including one 10-8 final tie break set and an 11-9 final tie
break set in the other match...

Annual ‘King Eric All for One Regatta’ Gears Up for Montagu Bay

Nassau, The Bahamas – The Annual ‘King Eric’ Gibson All for One Regatta,
in memory of the notable entertainer and sailing legend, held at the
start of the New Year, will take place January 6-8, on Montagu Bay.
Events will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily.
Chairman Eric Gibson, Jr. in press conference to announce the regatta at
Bahama Grill on Wednesday, said of his father: "King Eric was
responsible for establishing most, if not all, of the Bahamian Sloop
Sailing Clubs in The Bahamas, as well as starting most, if not all, of
the Regattas on the various Family Islands” -- adding that King Eric saw
regattas as an excellent way to stimulate economies on those islands...

Ethiopians dominate the 15th Xiamen International Marathon

The first IAAF Gold Label Road Race of 2017, the Xiamen International
Marathon, started promptly at 08:00 on Monday 2nd January and was
dominated by Ethiopian athletes in both the men’s and women’s elite
In the men’s race, winner Lemi Berhanu took the lead from
the start and never looked threatened, coming through to win in a time
of 2:08:27. Although outside of his personal best (2:04:33), the
22-year-old was happy with the result, having already commented in the
press conference that the “the course is very hard with a lot of rises
and falls, and the weather is very hot”...

Registration for the Sunshine
Insurance Marathon Bahamas (SIMB) relay is trending ahead of the 2015
numbers by 65%.
In 2016, the relay was a sold-out event.
Bahamas will be held on January 15, 2017, a day after the 7th annual
Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure® 5K event.
