Top Bahamian Athletes Named to Rio 2016 Olympics Team - Jul 22, 2016 - 3:49:37 PM

Nassau, New Providence - The Bahamas Olympic Committee today named the national team travelling to represent the country at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The team’s top sponsor since the 2012 London Olympics is The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC). 

“We are extremely grateful to BTC for again stepping forward to support Bahamian international sport”, said Olympic Committee Secretary General Romell Knowles.  “The athletes are trained and approaching their high peak of fitness and readiness just in time to compete at their best.”

 The team is led by returning Chef de Mission Roy Colebrook, also a Vice President of the Olympic Committee.  Team Manager is Ralph McKinney...

BBFF's Northern Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Show: July 23 - Jul 22, 2016 - 1:24:40 PM

The Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation’s Annual Northern Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Show will take place this Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Regency Theatre starting at 7pm. Prejudging starts at 9:30am.

A competitors motorcade is set for Friday, July 22nd leading to the Port Lucaya Marketplace where a public weigh-in will take place from 6 - 9pm.

“This is the first year that the Northern Bahamas Show will be used as a pre-qualifier leading up to The Bahamas Nationals, which will be held on August 27, in Nassau, at the Melia Ball Room..."

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- Bahamian NBA basketball star Chavano "Buddy" Hield arrived in Nassau, July 20, and will be honoured among other national sports legends on Thursday evening at special ceremonies during the nation's 43rd Anniversary of Bahamas Independence celebrations.  Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Dr Daniel Johnson welcomed Buddy at a Press Conference at Lynden Pindling International Airport, VIP Lounge, and Director General of Tourism Joy Jibrilu made a presentation to the popular athlete, who worked his way from the basketball courts of Grand Bahama Island all the way to the NBA and the New Orleans Pelicans.

Take one look at this picture and the words “shy and introverted” do not come to mind, but they are exactly what set Grand Bahama teenager Dereja Bain on the path to just becoming the country’s youngest karate black belt.

Her lack of confidence had impacted her school work as a Grade 3 girl at Sunland Baptist Academy, but she was naturally strong and well-coordinated, and armed with those qualities joined The Bahamas Martial Arts Academy. Just eight years later she made history.

The 15-year-old, who just completed Grade 10, not only has accomplished something remarkable in her chosen sport, but is much more relaxed and confident in life generally, and an excellent student who lists math as her favourite subject...

Davis Cup Winners Receive Heroes' Welcome in Bahamas - Jul 21, 2016 - 11:05:01 PM

The 2016 Davis Cup Zone III Co-Winners returned home yesterday to a heroes’ welcome.  The team, which includes player/captain Marvin Rolle, Baker Newman, Spencer Newman and Kevin Major Jr. are still taking in their gargantuan win in La Paz, Bolivia. The group played their last match on Saturday where they defeated Jamaica 2-0.  This win catapulted Team Bahamas from Zone III to Zone II. In 2016 there was participation from 135 nations in the Davis Cup, making the Davis Cup the world’s largest annual international team competition in sport!

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association(BLTA) planned a special day which included live radio interviews, call ins and open phone lines, newspaper interviews, television recordings and a warm congratulatory reception at the National Tennis Centre.  The team had an opportunity to relay their experiences to the general public and to share their special moments in this year’s Davis Cup Competition...

It was only this morning that The Bahamas Olympic Committee in concert with the Bahamas Association of Amateur Athletic Associations received communication from the IAAF inviting The Bahamas to enter the 4x400 women’s relay team to participate in the BTC Bahamas National Team travelling to Rio de Janeiro.

The Bahamas Olympic Committee accepted the invitation and the following individuals have been named to the team: Christine Amertil, Lanece Clarke, Carmeisha Cox, Shaquania Dorsett, Shaunae Miller and Anthonique Strachan...

Linz, AUSTRIA - As The Bahamas prepares to host the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in 2017, the country's national squad is reaping the benefits of a 6 week training camp based in Basel, Switzerland.

In the team's first competitive matches since April, the squad travelled to Linz, Austria to take part in the Nations Cup.

NASSAU, Bahamas — Chavano ‘Buddy’ Hield was bombarded by scores of excited visitors and Bahamians at the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) when he arrived yesterday afternoon.

Hield, a rising Bahamian basketball star who was drafted sixth by the New Orleans Pelicans at the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, was met with a Junkanoo rush out at the airport.

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture in conjunction with the Ministry of Works and Urban Development held a press conference and contract signing for the Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium on Monday, July 18, 2016 at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.

The contract in the amount of $21 million was awarded to Woslee Construction, which was represented by company president, Mr. Ashley Glinton. Work on the structure is scheduled to begin around mid-August. The stadium is to be located opposite Government High School...

A splendid showing all around for The Bahamas in The 2016 Davis Cup Competiton. Due to the consistent and excellent play, Team Bahamas has been promoted to Zone II. With a final win over Team Jamaica today the Bahamas reigns supreme as the only undefeated team in Pool B. They end the competition with a 5-0 performance in the 2016 Davis Cup Competition. How did they do it? They won by using all of the talent and skills along with a mixture of experience and strategy. Led by Captain/Player Mr. Marvin Rolle, The Bahamas defeated Honduras, Costa Rica, Bermuda, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica.

Yesterday’s win over Jamaica had its share of drama and suspense and did not come without some level of hard work and determination by our group of Bahamian guys. Spencer Newman was up first against Damion Johnson and lost in the first set 3-6...

A clean sweep against Trinidad & Tobago today for The Bahamas Davis Cup Team. The competition got off to a great start with Kevin Major Jr. leading the way. Despite his first appearance on the court there were no nerves present as Kevin sliced his way through the competition. In the first set Kevin beat Luke De Caires 6-2. However, De Caires answered with a win in the second 6-3. Nonetheless Kevin regrouped and overpowered De Caires in the third set in splendid fashion 6-1. Spencer Newman played next and dealt with Akiel Duke 6-3,6-1. With the win in the bag, The Bahamas still give a good showing by winning the doubles 6-3 6-2. Spencer and Marvin Rolle continue to hone their chemistry and was victorious over Chung and De Caires of Trinidad...

In an exciting move designed to expand and raise the standard of play in women’s soccer, the Bahamas Football Association will be holding a draft for the new Women’s League Monday at Roscow AL Davies Soccer Centre in Nassau.

“This is a great thing for the BFA and women’s soccer,” said Carl Lynch, co-project coordinator for the Bahamas Football Association, the official football federation in The Bahamas. “The majority of players entered so far are experienced players who are either off in college, have aged out of the youth league or played years ago and want to get back into the sport...”
