Orlando,
Florida - 14 year-old Leah Rodgers made The Bahamas proud by capturing
a first place title in one of her five events at an international
gymnastics
meet over the weekend. Rodgers, who is a member of Nassau ‘Nastics,
was the only Bahamian and Caribbean competitor at the 2010 Leprechaun
Classics in Florida. This was her first ever competition.
The
young athlete wowed the judges and blew away her competition by getting
top marks with super splits and fantastic flips in her floor routine.
Rodgers returned to the competition ring and earned a medal on the bars
and on the vault. Despite slipping off of the balance beam during her
display, Rodgers jumped back into competition to continue her routine.

Sports B.A.C.F. Trial for National Cycling Team - Mar 15, 2010 - 6:41:54 PM Nassau, Bahamas - The
New Providence Cycling Association staged its 2nd road race on Saturday
March 13th at the National Heritage Parking lot. This race was used as
one of the trial for the National Team selection by the Federation, the
next one will be held in Freeport during the month of April, and the last
trial right back here in Nassau in April as well.

Bahamas Weekly News Team recently visited with Bahamian bodybuilder
Joel Stubbs who is noted to have the 'Best Back in the World" .
Joel
was off to assist with the Arnold Classic (as in 'Swarchenegger') in
California last weekend. Joel is a Bahamas Air pilot who has been
bodybuilding for 14 years, and last year competed in the Mr. Olympia
competition, a first for The Bahamas!
Joel can bench press 550
pounds when he is in his prime condition. He is presently rebuilding after a knee injury and is on the comeback trail to compete
again soon. He looks fine to us however...
Nassau, Bahamas - After a year of intense planning and preparation,
the Nassau Yacht Club is in the final stages of readying itself to once
again welcome the International Star Class.
The Western Hemisphere Championship 2010 will
commence with a packed opening reception on Monday 12 April. Racing
will begin in earnest on Wednesday 14 April with competition proceeding
through until
Saturday 17 April. Races will be sailed in the area known as the
Douglas Roads off the eastern end of New Providence, which boasts the
signature clear blue waters of the Bahamas against a backdrop of the

of the only all-release billfish tournaments in the Bahamas.
The inaugural All-Release Boat Harbour
Billfish Challenge will commence on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 and conclude

DOHA, Qatar (
Associated Press) — The IAAF has
announced that
London, Beijing and the Polish city of Chorzow are in the running to
host the 2015 world championships.
IAAF spokesman Nick Davies says a decision on
which will host the outdoor track and field event will be made in
November at its ruling council meeting in Monaco.
Davies says the IAAF has received bids to host
the 2013 world youth championships from Greenville, South Carolina;
Nassau, Bahamas and a Slovenia, which is yet to nominate a city.

officially opens the West Grand Bahama Basketball Tournament at the
Eight Mile Rock High School Gym, Friday, March 5.

Florida - 14 year-old Leah Rodgers will be entering her very first
international gymnastics meet this weekend as the only Bahamian in the
entire competition. The ninth grade student of Queen’s College has been
a member of Nassau ‘Nastics, The Bahamas’ oldest gymnastics club for
three years. She plans to make her competition debut at the 2010
Leprechaun Classics in Orlando, Florida which takes place March 13 and
14.
“I’m
looking forward to my very first meet and I hope to score at least an
eight on my events,” says Leah who will be competing on the floor,
balance beam, vault and uneven bars. “The floor is my favorite routine
and I think I’m glad to finally have a trip and I am most looking
forward to getting it over with...”

– “Baseball is the tool we use to
impact our youth and provide educational opportunity for them and their family
with financial funding through high level training and exposure,” said
Coach Patrick Knowles of the YMCA
Baseball Academy.
The YMCA’s affiliation
with the Hall of Fame Baseball League in Florida
is doing just that, giving young Grand Bahama
athletes greater exposure from playing abroad. Twenty-three boys traveled
to South Florida recently to compete against
teams in the 12 and Under, and 14 and Under divisions.
The trip was made possible
through membership fees and donations. The Grand Bahama Port Authority
Limited (GBPA) is also major corporate contributor to programs at the local
YMCA....

Sir Jack Hayward Grand Bahama Soccer Camp, now in its seventh highly-successful
year.
It will feature the event’s first
full-time professional female soccer coach. Her name is Sarah Green
and she works for the London-based Football Association as part of its
drive to take kids and turn them into international players of the future.
The camp’s 180 attendees split roughly
equally between boys and girls but Sarah is at home coaching both and
in fact leads mixed classes on a daily basis.
She follows a long line of top-line
coaches the camp has attracted from the UK, the country where what is
the world’s biggest sport was invented...
Freeport, Bahamas - The youth of Grand Bahama Island, and in particular, the high school
scholarship students (currently 17) were the beneficiaries of the 7th.
annual Grand Bahama American Women's Club (GBAWC) golf tournament, The
Home Centre Classic, which was held on Saturday, February 20. Harsh
economic times made the work of the organizing committee much more
difficult, but the wonderfully resilient people of Freeport/Lucaya
rallied to the challenge. Many local businesses and individuals took up
the slack and eighty golfers enjoyed playing Our Lucaya Reef Course for
this annual event.

patronize those who have given to this, the GBAWC's only annual
fundraiser...

Freeport, Bahamas -The first Bahamas Lawn and Tennis Association sanctioned junior tennis
tournament of the year took place this past weekend (February 19-22, 2010) at the
Gully Bowe Tennis Center at the Lucayan Bath & Racquet Club. The
Grand Bahama Tennis Association hosted 35 junior tennis players from Nassau,
Eleuthera and Grand Bahama for several days of healthy tennis competition with several
hundred spectators in attendance during the 4 day event.
Tournament director Gully Bowe said that this year's event was very competitive
and a great success. "I enjoyed the tournament and I know that the young
tennis players did as well," he added. “This year’s players displayed
a high level of competitiveness and good sportsmanship as they vied for the first
place trophies in the various age categories” remarked Bowe.
The YMCA Baseball Academy (YBA) is apart of the Florida Hall of fame Baseball league
in Ft. Lauderdale. Our Members travel to South Florida to Play four league
games in each age division. We just completed Weekend #1. Our Second Weekend is
March 20th 2010 and our Third Weekend is April 24th 2010.
The YMCA Baseball Academy (YBA) is all about Exposure and providing
the young men with more opportunity to play Baseball at a higher level: When
This Florida League finishes in MAY we would have completed a Possible 16 game
schedule to add to the boys local league schedule in Legacy Baseball PONY
League and GBABA Little league
The Goal is development and getting experience, We want to win, but we wont
sacrifice our players development for winning, so we ensure our boys receive
the required playing time for us to evaluate them...
