NASSAU, Bahamas - Reigning Carifta champions Charisma Taylor and Tamar Greene among 18 local athletes who have attained qualifying standards for this year’s Carifta Games set for St. Georges, Grenada from March 26-28.

Taylor, who won the girls under 18 long jump and triple jump at last year’s Carifta Games in St. Kitts, leads with the way with qualifying performances in four events (100m, 100m hurdles, long jump, triple jump) in the girls under 18 category while Greene has surpassed the mark for the boys under 20 triple jumps three times already for the season...

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited (BTC) has announced that it will be the title sponsor for the first ever one day “Urban Love Games”. The event which will be held on Saturday, February 13th is being organized by the Urban Renewal Commission and will be the first of its kind, joining more than 2,000 persons from nine Urban Renewal Centers in New Providence for a day filled with sports and entertainment.

The Fed Cup Team of Iesha Shepherd, Gabriela Donaldson, Sierra Donaldson and Lauryn Daxon were in action today against Puerto Rico. The home team Puerto Rico had great support and home court advantage and was able to defeat The Bahamas. Gabriela Donaldson lost to Bou 6-0,6-1. Iesha Shepherd lost to Puig 6-0, 6-0. The duo of Donaldson and Shepherd played much better in doubles but lost to Puerto Rico 6-4, 6-0.

The Bahamas faces another tough team tomorrow and will match up against Uruguay. The Team is gaining great exposure and experience as they represent The Bahamas on the international stage.

Back from a highly successful 4 day training camp in Fort Lauderdale, FL just last week, Strikers Boxing Club’s 7 elite boxers and 2 coaches are off again, this time to Havana, Cuba for their second training camp of the year at the Academia Cubana de Boxeo (National Boxing Academy of Cuba) from Wednesday, Feb. 3rd for a week. “Our boxers had a chance to spar with amateur boxers at different boxing clubs in Fort Lauderdale last week.

There is very little opportunity for our boxers to spar here at home so it’s extremely important for us to take our boxers away in order to get the much needed exposure and experience” explains Strikers head coach Ronn Rodgers.  “Thanks to the continued support from Island Game and J.E.M Holdings Ltd, we are able to continue with our International Training Camp Program for our elite fighters...”

Two regulars on the local triathlon and international ironman scene made it to the top of the leader-board in the first BMC Dri Tri on Saturday, January 30th.

Competitors had to Row on the ergometers, Bike on spin cycles and Run on treadmills for 15 minutes each to see who could log the furthest distance.

Cameron Roach claimed the top male prize with a total Row, Bike and Run distance of 9.74 miles. Right on his heels was Donovan Rolle who logged 9.71 miles over 15 minutes on each apparatus...

Officials of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism are already planning for an exciting Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA 2017 after history was made on January 31 at the Ocean Club Golf Course.

Twenty-year-old Hyo-Joo Kim of South Korea beat over 100 of the best female golfers in the world after she held on to a two-stroke lead over previous champion golfers Stacy Lewis and Sei Young Kim.

The tournament starts tomorrow February 1  2016 where The Bahamas plays Guatemala at 10:00am. Paradise Island, Bahamas – Hyo Joo Kim, who was second last year in voting behind Sei Young Kim in Louise Suggs Rookie of the Year voting, captured the tournament that kicked off Sei Young Kim’s award-winning season. Paradise Island, Bahamas - Sweden's Anna Nordqvist and Charley Hull of England each converted birdies on the par-5 18th hole Saturday to nose ahead of the field by one stroke after three rounds of the $1.4 million Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic.

Paradise Island, Bahamas – Cristie Kerr put on a show. Rookie Megan Khang performed like anything but a rookie. They were the lead storylines in Friday’s second round of the $1.4 million Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic.

While Kerr threatened the course record, Khang birdied the par-5 18th hole to cap a 5-under-par 68 and climb into a share of the lead with first-round co-leaders Charley Hull of England and Haru Nomura of Japan on a day when tricky winds strafed the Ocean Club Golf Course. Hull and Nomura each shot 70 and completed 36 holes with Khang at 8-under 138.

Bahamas to host 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games - Jan 29, 2016 - 6:20:42 PM

The Bahamas has been awarded the 2017 edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games, it was announced today, aiming to unite 1000 young athletes aged 14-18 in a Caribbean carnival of impactful competition, personal development and new Commonwealth friendships.

The 6th edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games will take place from 19-23 July 2017 in the nation’s capital, Nassau and seven sports are proposed: Aquatics (Swimming), Athletics (Track and Field), Boxing, Cycling (Road), Judo, Rugby Sevens and Tennis. It will be the first time Judo has been presented at a Commonwealth Youth Games.
