24 Schools to Compete in the 37th Track & Field Bahamas Public Primary School Championship Meet - May 26, 2015 - 2:03:56 PM

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The New Providence Public Primary Schools Sports Association (NPPPSSA) will host its 37th Annual Track and Field Championship meet for public primary schools from Wednesday, May 27th to Friday, May 29th at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium.

Plans for the meet were announced during a press conference at the Ministry of Education Science and Technology on Friday, May 22.   Joel Lewis, Acting Deputy Director of Education, along with representatives of the NPPPSSA were in attendance including Dawn Knowles, Senior Education Officer, Primary Physical Education; Louise Forbes, Sports Administrator, Student Services Division; Cedricka Rolle, Assistant Treasurer and Clara Storr, Board Member.

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - The Under 20 Boys Track Team of Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy paid a courtesy call on Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, at the Ministry on Thursday. The group was accompanied by their principal, Norris Bain and head track coach, Nickito Johnson.

During the visit, the Minister said Kendrick Thompson, Ricardo Richardson, Ken Russell, Javan Martin, Holland Martin and Jonathan Smith are "some of the finest young Grand Bahamian athletes and their performances locally, nationally and internationally have been nothing short of phenomenal...

Nassau, Bahamas – The spirit of relays came to the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, on May 2nd and May 3rd as the venue hosted the second edition of the IAAF World Relays.

Over 700 athletes, coaches and officials represented 43 countries in ten relays – during the two days of competition at the IAAF/BTC World Relays Bahamas 2015.

Today (May 18th 2015) the Local Organizers Committee hailed the event a success and announced that planning for the 2017 edition has already started...

This year’s Grand Bahama soccer camp will field the most highly-qualified team of visiting coaches in the annual event’s 11-year history.

The trio from the UK all have professional level coaching licenses and have then gone on to successfully complete further programmes aimed at making them particularly skilled in working with young people. In the process they learned how to blend high-level teaching with making kids have fun.

All have since set thousands of children on the pathway to becoming quality players, with one having coached a youngster who went on to play for England as a full international...

The Freeport Rugby Football Club is very proud to be hosting our 5th Annual Youth Rugby Festival on the weekend of May 16th and 17th. As we enter our 50th anniversary year the Club is experiencing a resurgence in all our youth development programs. Over the past ten years we have seen record number of girls and boys playing rugby, soccer, flag football and other activities at The Club and the Youth Festival is one of our main attractions of the year.

Throughout the five years of the festival we have been fortunate in our friends from Cayman Rugby joining us for each of the festivals and a HUGE thanks goes out to everyone associated with Cayman Rugby in making this trip every year...

Nassau, Bahamas - A year ago, Smokey’s Karate School (SKS) a martial arts academy in Englerston, was in danger of closing its doors due to a lack of safety flooring. Today, thanks to assistance from its ongoing sponsor BTC, the academy is thriving and has its sights set on sending students to the International Sport Karate Association’s US Open Martial Arts Championship in Florida, July 3rd and 4th.

Last year, BTC answered a plea for assistance from the school and donated new carpeting and tumbling mats after concerns were expressed about the safety of the children and the noise-level in the business complex where the school is located. More recently, BTC helped them with the purchase of a van for transporting the students to tournaments...

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe on Wednesday encouraged students of Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy to strive to be their best during a special Awards Celebration recognizing the students for their accomplishments this academic year.

Held under the theme, "Strive for Excellence," the Minister gave examples of Bahamian greats who overcame obstacles and are well-known in their chosen professions. Two examples he gave were Sir Sidney Poitier, who started in New York washing dishes and was taught by a Jewish friend to read -- today, the well-known actor is also directing films and writing books; and Andre Rodgers, who was a cricket player but became the first Bahamian to play major league baseball...

Nassau, Bahamas  - Congratulations to Buccaneers Rugby Club for winning the 2014/15 Heineken Cup!

The National Sevens teams, both male & female will be travelling to the NACRA 7s in North Carolina in June in an to attempt to qualify for the Olympics.

The team trains every Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

ESPN Events Acquires Popeyes Bahamas Bowl - May 12, 2015 - 12:27:29 PM

The Popeyes Bahamas Bowl has been acquired by ESPN Events, a subsidiary of ESPN. The second Popeyes Bahamas Bowl will be played at Nassau's Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015, showcasing schools from Conference USA and the Mid-American Conference.

The bowl was acquired from Bahamas Bowl, LLC, which owned the inaugural game in 2014.

“We are excited to be adding the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl to our portfolio of events,” said Pete Derzis, senior vice president, ESPN Events.

The relays held May 2-3 at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium attracted a more than 20,000 raucous and enthusiastic crowd against the backdrop of pulsating Junkanoo sounds cheering on the athletes of their choice...

Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world has been captured on canvas doing his famous winning pose by Bahamian Jamaal Rolle, The Celebrity Artist. The portrait was presented to Bolt after his appearance at the IAAF World Relays which were held for the second time in Nassau, Bahamas.

The Celebrity Artist is famous for his life-like portrait depictions of political, entertainment and sports figures, and was commissioned by The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. The painting was presented to Mr. Bolt at  a special luncheon held on May 6, 2015 at the SuperClubs Breezes Hotel in Nassau, were the Rt. Hon Perry G Christie, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and a list of dignitaries and executives from the Ministry of Tourism were present...

The sweet sounds of Junkanoo, Bahamian music, culture and entertainment were on full display May 2-3 at the Bahamas IAAF BTC World Relays 2015 and visitors are still singing praises over the successful event.

While the event at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in New Providence was certainly exciting for all locals and tourists with the USA setting two world records, the Market Place on the stadium grounds was also live with action.

There, Bahamian treats like conch fritters and drinks could be purchased.

Senior students of the New Providence Martial Arts Centre, Shirley Street East, William Knowles, 16 and Nathaniel Woodside, 13 participated in the 48th Annual JKR Gasshuku Training Seminars and International Tournament, in Anaheim, California, April 30 – May 4, 2015.

The highlight of the event was the advanced training seminars with JKR instructors out of Japan. The students were also exposed to training with other JKR students from around the world. Knowles finished with a silver medals in Kata and Kumite. Woodside, a gold medal in Kumite and a bronze medal in Kata. Knowles, a 10th grade student of St John’s College and Woodside, a 7th grade student of St Augustine’s College...

Paradise Island, The Bahamas – In keeping with its ongoing support for Special Olympics Bahamas, Harborside Resort at Atlantis recently donated a whopping $10,000 to the organization which aims to provide training and athletic competition for persons with intellectual disabilities.

“This year is a special year in that it is an Olympic year with the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games opening in Los Angeles on July 25th,” explains Harborside GM Judith Thompson. “It is hoped that our support, coupled with the generous support of the wider community, will enable Special Olympics Bahamas to take each and every one of our special athletes to the games to participate,” she adds...

US Win Men’s 4x800 Relays; Kenyans Disqualified - May 4, 2015 - 3:23:55 PM

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The United States Men’s 4x800 Metres team came out on top, beating out the Kenyans, who were disqualified in one of the much-anticipated races during the IAAF/BTC World Relays Bahamas 2015.

On Saturday, May 2, the result was a surprise to the thousands of spectators who filled the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium and to the Kenyans themselves, known for their long distance prowess on the track.

The results: US won in a time of 7.04.84; Poland, second in 7:09.98, Australia third in 7:16.30, Mexico forth in 7:22.61 and Kenya, DQ.
