Freeport International Junior Rugby Festival largest to date - May 25, 2017 - 12:14:09 PM

Last weekend saw the largest Freeport Junior Rugby Festival, in its seven-year history, and some amazing games of rugby played the Freeport Rugby Football Club (FRFC). Both girls and boys played in matches on Saturday and Sunday from the Under 8’s division all the way up to the Under 18’s boys game.

Thirty -five matches were played on Saturday exhibiting some breath-taking games between girls and boys from five different touring sides. With over two hundred and eighty kids playing rugby from The Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Key Biscayne, Florida as well as Nassau and Freeport, making up the numbers to create the largest number of children playing rugby over a weekend anywhere in the Caribbean and Florida...
U.N. ‘Slow Down, Save Lives” Movement Gains Momentum in Bahamas - May 18, 2017 - 11:34:47 AM

They held up signs with lines like “Race Drivers Say Don’t Race” and “You Drink, I Drive.” They were the recruits joining the movement to reduce the number of road deaths and they took the pledge at the Mall at Marathon Saturday during the United Nations Road Safety Week May 8-14.

This is the fourth year the United Nations program has aimed at slashing the startling statistics that include the road crash death of a child somewhere in the world every 30 seconds. Over the course of three days, the 7th Annual Junior Rugby Festival took place at the Freeport Rugby Football Club, May 12th-14th.

The annual tournament, which was organized by the Freeport Rugby Football Club (FRFC), attracted players from the ages of eight to eighteen who wished to engage in a fun-filled weekend of friendly competition.

The Bahamian Olympic Champion athlete took a new world lead in the 400m on Saturday at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting. The run was a personal best of 49. 77, relegating all her competitors by more than a second.

The staff at The Bahamas Embassy Consular Annex received a generous donation of cricket equipment from Mr. Tanveer Abbas, a Pakistani businessman based in the D.C. area.  Mr. Abbas, an avid cricket lover, met Greggory Taylor, President of the National Cricket Association and members of The Bahamas National Cricket Team, when the team travelled to D.C. in July 2016 to compete in cricket matches with the Washington Cricket League. Mr. Abbas subsequently visited The Bahamas and was inspired by the hard work and dedication of The Bahamas Cricket Association and felt motivated to assist the country in its efforts to promote and cultivate the sport...

Visitors from all over the world descended on The Bahamas for the historic FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017, which ended on Sunday in dramatic fashion.

Organizers of the biennial event said The Bahamas was a great destination for the tournament and hundreds of players, coaching staff, event officials and beach soccer enthusiasts traveled for the event and stayed in Nassau for two weeks or more.

This was the first time that the World Cup was held in the Caribbean, but after The Bahamas edition it may not by the last. The stadium saw more than 2,000 spectators each day...

During the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 games, H.E. Tony Joudi, Ambassador to the UAE and State of Qatar, paid a visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) team at the Malcolm Soccer Stadium before their game on April 30th where the UAE team played Panama’s team.

Ambassador Joudi extended a warm welcome to the group and shared insight about The Bahamas Pavilion that will be part of Expo Dubai 2020. Members of the team extended an invitation to Ambassador Joudi to attend FIFA World Cup UAE 2017 in December.

The visa waiver agreement signed with the United Arab Emirates on November 2016 is now in effect and it means that UAE citizens can now enter The Bahamas...

Bahamas Steve Gardiner won the IAAF Diamond League men's 400m on Friday, May 5th in Qatar at the Doha 2017 meet.

With a time of 44.60 seconds, he had USA's LaShawn Merritt both close behind with world champion Merritt with a time of 44.76 and Tony McQuay with 44.92. Both Americans performing a season's best.

“It was really hard, but I expected to win,” said Gardiner in a brief interview as he collected $50,000 and eight points for his efforts...

Tourism numbers and hotel occupancy got a healthy boost when hundreds of international visitors travelled varying distances to Nassau for the recent IAAF/BTC World Relays 2017.

As in past years with athletic event guests, Sandyport Beach Resort recorded sell out nights with many of the IAAF officials and specialist support staff extending their stays beyond the end of the games.

Sixteen visiting teams are competing in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 in Nassau at the National Beach Soccer Arena at Malcolm Park in the biggest beach soccer event on the planet. April 27th opening games started with Iran taking Mexico 3 - 2; Senegal trounced Ecuador 9 - 0; Italy over Nigeria 12 - 6; and host team, Bahamas was defeated in a close match with Switzerland 3 - 2.

Beach soccer is an exciting fast action game played on a sand rectangle field approximately 40 by 30 yards. Instead of 2 halves, there are 3 twelve-minute periods; there are unlimited substitutions; and no draws / ties allowed...

The fifteen visiting teams competing in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 gave The Bahamas rave reviews after several days in Nassau preparing for the biggest beach soccer event on the globe. The teams dug their heels in the white sands of the National Beach Soccer Arena ahead of the competition, which will see a champion crowned after 9 grueling days of play.

Iran Goalkeeper Seyedpeyman Hosseinlargan said while the beauty of the island is tempting, this trip is all about business for his team.

Freeport Rugby & Football Club’s Under 10s enjoyed the best that Saturdays could offer this last weekend as they, along with over a dozen supporters, travelled to Nassau for a series of soccer games.

Ultimately the youngsters played 5 games over the course of the day in Dynamo Football Club’s Spring Break Youth Soccer Tournament.

The 10 boys who travelled certainly made full value of their day as they met at 6.30 in the morning to fly over to the capital. After a quick breakfast at the airport they then travelled to the Bahamas Football Association Soccer Fields where they met 5 other Nassau teams for a day of intense action...

Forty-two countries, more than 1,000 athletes, thousands of track and field fans and The Bahamas as the host country made for the perfect ingredients for the third edition of the IAAF/BTC Bahamas World Relays held on April 21-22, 2017.

One of the most anticipated track and field events of the year, visitors, locals and athletes were not disappointed as the energising sounds of Junkanoo music and the aroma of authentic Bahamian food wafted through the stadium.

Many volunteers consider it a national service

Organizers of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 are on the verge of pulling off the biggest tournament ever to be hosted in The Bahamas, but not without the help of many Bahamians who are giving of their time and expertise.
There are well over 200 Bahamian volunteers and many of them brand their charity as a national service.

The mega tournament runs from April 27 to May 7 at the National Beach Soccer Arena at Malcolm Park. It will feature 16 of the best beach soccer teams in the world.
