Sir Durward, now the world's oldest Olympian, pens book, "Never Give Up" - Jun 30, 2017 - 11:47:34 PM

Sir Durward Knowles who is now the oldest living Olympic champion in the world and a renowned Bahamian sailor, is penning another book to be released in October 2017, a month before his centurion birthday.

Sir Durward has chosen Scholar Books to publish “Never Give Up,” an inspirational book that covers his recovery from serious health complications that had caused him to rearrange his entire life.

In 2010, Sir Durward endured many health struggles undergoing several surgeries, months of recovery and having to learn to walk again. In 2015, he had a relapse and fought hard to get healthy again...
U17 Girls Ntl Soccer Team Trials Coming to Grand Bahama - Jun 27, 2017 - 8:03:13 PM

The Bahamas Football Association (BFA) has announced that trials for the under 17 girls national soccer team will take place at 11 am on July 1st at the Freeport Rugby Football Club in Grand Bahama Island.

Trials are open to all Girls who are born in the year 2001 or later, and who have a current (does not expire for 6 months at least), Bahamian Passport and US VISA.

The U 17 Girls Head Coach Kevin Davies and his assistant Coach Ricqea Bain will conduct the trials with the help of Mr. Robert Spellor, the FRFC president and his assistants, Mr. Mark Hardy and Mr. Nigel Kirkby...

RBC Royal Bank today announced its renewed commitment as the title sponsor of the RBC 2017 National Swimming Championships. Facilitated by the Bahamas Aquatics Federation, formerly Bahamas Swimming Federation, the National Swimming Championships will be held from June 22- 25, 2017. The third annual Bahamas Bowl drew thousands of visitors to The Bahamas and organizers are hoping to double that number, this year.

The bowl, touted as the highest rated live sporting event televised in The Bahamas, brought 1,865 total visitors to The Bahamas with an estimated number of 2,300 hotel rooms sold for the event. Within the 1,865 total visitors, 1000 were university alumni and fans and the remaining 865 were University and team officials, Popeyes Sponsors and Guests, ESPN events staff, NCAA Game officials and ESPN production...

Steven Gardiner came in first at the Stockholm Diamond League on Father's Day with a time of 44.58 seconds in the 400 metres beating Baboloki Thebe of Boswana, who was just behind with 44.99. Finishing third was Kevin Borlee of Belgium.

Gardiner was the only Bahamian at the event. He will be home in Nassau this weekend for the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations' Aliv National Open Championship.

His national record time is 44.26...

The Verizon WNBA All-Star 2017 match will take place on July 22nd in Seattle, Washington, and will be broadcast on ABC at 3:30pm. Voting presented by Verizon, is underway and Bahamians and fans of Jonquel Jones are encouraged to vote to help get her there.

Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea FC both have something to fight for this weekend at the Freeport Rugby Football Club field. Coach Donnie Knowles and the Dortmund team and staff want to defend their title as League Champs from last year while, Coach Michael DosSantos and his Chelsea players and staff, want to regain the title they had in 2015.

The two teams have met on three occasions this year. They have defeated each other once and the last game resulted in a tie. This game is definitely the most highly contested match of the season. Both teams have one advantage. Chelsea has very experienced strong players and for the most part, are injury free. Borussia Dortmund leads the league standings with one point, meaning they would still win if the game is tied at the end of regulation time, and they have been plagued with injuries this year...

Bahamian Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo broke Allyson Felix’s world record in the women’s 200-meter straight event on May 4th at the Adidas Boost Boston Games, running 21.76. Miller-Uibo held the Bahamas women’s 200m and indoor 300m national records.

Bahamas Olympic Committee President Wellington Miller has received a signal appointment to the Technical Commission of the regional powerhouse Pan American Sports Organisation (PASO). PASO is the international organisation which represents all National Olympic Committees of the Americas.

PASO's Technical Commission is charged with creating the technical programs that will help PanAmSports’ members to be more successful in Pan-American and world sports, including technical policies, training support and new competitions in the regions represented by PASO.

Freeport International Junior Rugby Festival largest to date - May 25, 2017 - 12:14:09 PM

Last weekend saw the largest Freeport Junior Rugby Festival, in its seven-year history, and some amazing games of rugby played the Freeport Rugby Football Club (FRFC). Both girls and boys played in matches on Saturday and Sunday from the Under 8’s division all the way up to the Under 18’s boys game.

Thirty -five matches were played on Saturday exhibiting some breath-taking games between girls and boys from five different touring sides. With over two hundred and eighty kids playing rugby from The Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Key Biscayne, Florida as well as Nassau and Freeport, making up the numbers to create the largest number of children playing rugby over a weekend anywhere in the Caribbean and Florida...
