And they are off to the consolation finals!

Yesterday playing Cuba the Junior Fed Cup team was victorious.

Gabrielle Simms defeat Reyes 6-3,6-2.
Peyton Anderson lost to Valdes 3-6,1-6. The duo won 6-0 , 7-6(6) over Cuba.

The Bahamas played Jamaica today for a chance to play in the consolation finals...

The University of The Bahamas Mingoes men’s basketball team lost to the Discount Distributors Rockets for the second time this season 88-81 Wednesday night at the C.I. Gibson gym

Lerecus Armbrister lead the Rockets with 18 points and 4 assists. Georgio Walkes scored 17 and 8 rebounds while David Taylor scored 16 to go along with 5 rebounds.

Kemsy Sylvester had 29 points and 12 rebounds in the loss for the Mingoes. Romero Cornish scored 19 points and 4 rebounds and Travaughn Nicholls had 10 points and 3 rebounds...

Team Bahamas wins 3 0 against Panama in Jr. Fed Cup action.  The three member team of Peyton Anderson, Gabrielle Simms and Perjae Major played exceptionally well to get a clean sweep.

After coming extremely close in their previous two matches against Trinidad and Tobago and Curacao, Bahamas achieved its first team win for the competition in El Salvador...

Bahamian Champions Cynthia Rahming -57Kg, Sasha Ingraham +78Kg and Joshua Mcfall (-73kg) recently attended a week-long training camp in Cancun Mexico with Head Coach Oneysi Portorreal-Pons. The purpose of the camp was to prepare hopefuls for the upcoming Pan American Games in July.

"These are the athletes most likely to qualify" said Coach Pons "because they are doing the work!" He went on further to say that "the camp gave me everything I needed to evaluate them and take them to the next level...

Junior Fed Cup is an international team event in junior female tennis (16 and under age category). Competitions were launched by the ITF in 1985  and every year nations enter regional qualifying events with the winners progressing to the Finals...

Big increase in numbers for Junior Tennis - Jan 21, 2019 - 9:25:37 PM

A great sign for the future of Bahamian tennis is the large jump in young players from 20 to 35 participants at the Winterbotham IC Junior Series for the young 10’s and 12’s tennis players this last weekend. This is from the inaugural event last year to the same event this year.

In this first of the 2019 Series 35 most juniors played three matches in a Round Robin format on Saturday at The National Tennis Centre. Then with play offs for everyone on Sunday giving 4 or 5 matches in total.  This was the first of a series of four events  which will be followed by events at The Leyton Hewitt Academy at Albany in March...

Padraig Harrington has been named as the European Captain for The 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin from September 25 – 27, 2020.

The three-time Major Champion has a storied Ryder Cup career, having represented Europe six times as a player – including being part of four triumphs – while latterly he has brought his extensive experience to the role of Vice-Captain in the past three editions of the biennial contest.

The 47 year old joins Paul McGinley (2014) and Darren Clarke (2016), as professionals from the island of Ireland to lead Europe and will be hoping to emulate the last European triumph on American soil – at Medinah in 2012...

It’s been just a little over two months since Helen Pinder, the matriarch of Pinder’s Customs Brokerage Ltd., lost her battle with breast cancer. Now, more than half of the staff at her company, along with their family members, will take part in a local cancer run this month in her memory – continuing a tradition she started five years ago.

“She was like the sun. She was the center and lit up everything,” said Shannon Pinder, as she reflected on the memory of her late mother-in-law.

In total, 966.2 million soles (USD 286.45m) of the total 981.4 million soles (USD 290.95m) organising committee budget for 2018 was invested in infrastructure projects that will ensure a world-class Pan American and Parapan American Games that deliver lasting benefits to communities in Lima and across Peru...

17th Annual Bul Reg Regatta for Class C Boats was held over the weekend in George Town, Exuma. The Cameron Williams Cup Race was the only race held during day two (held in honour of the late Jr. Skipper). 

Winning the cup race was Bul Reg.   Golden Girl came 2nd;  and Bye Gully  came 3rd.

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association 2018 Giorgio Baldacci winners are Donte Armbrister for the males and Sydney Clarke for the females.   Sydney and Donte have exhibited great skill throughout the tournament and were also victorious today. Both players went undefeated in match play.

The talented finalists are Justin Lunn and Sierra Donaldson. Justin and Sierra are former Davis Cup and Fed Cup members respectively.

Rounding out the top five for the males include Jacobi Bain, Shannon Francis and Jody Turnquest and for the females it includes Perjae Major, Afrika Smith and Donesha Gibson...
Golf Tournament for GB High School Scholarships - Dec 23, 2018 - 4:13:52 PM

The Grand Bahama American Women’s Club’s 16th annual golf tournament launches Feb. 23., 2019 at the Reef Course in Freeport. The fundraiser, which has generated over $100,000 for high school scholarships in recent years, draws dozens of golfers from on and off the island.

In 2108, the GBAWC awarded scholarships to 21 students, and donated to The Children’s Library, Girl Guides, Grand Bahama Humane Society, Rand Nature Center, Regency Theater, Reef Ball Project, Salvation Army, Sailing Club, Us Too Prostate Cancer Awareness and the YMCA for summer camp programs and community improvement projects...
