New dean increases focus on excellence in clinical education

New partnerships with Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Oakland (SJMO) in Pontiac, Mich., are two recent and notable achievements for Ross University School of Medicine. Each new hospital affiliation will provide Ross medical students the opportunity to receive clinical instruction in key core disciplines at a single hospital: family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery. Adding these prestigious institutions to the school’s roster of U.S. hospitals is one of many milestones for developing the clinical sciences program articulated by the medical school’s new dean, Joseph Flaherty, MD.

“Although classroom and laboratory settings play an important role in medical students’ education, there is nothing like a clinical practice setting where they learn by doing,” said Mark Loafman, MD, MPH, chief clinical integration officer at Norwegian American Hospital and director of inpatient services for Northwestern University’s Family Medicine Residency Program. “This new training program is focused on Ross students and allows them the opportunity to spend their entire third year of education at our hospital.”

Established in 1894, Norwegian American Hospital is a 200-bed premier healthcare provider where the patient comes first. A family- and community-centered acute care hospital, it has served the northwest side of Chicago for more than 115 years.

According to Stanley Dorfman, MD, director of medical education for SJMO, giving students the opportunity to complete all of their core clerkships in one location enables a smooth transition from one discipline to the next, thereby maximizing the clinical learning experience. “Ross students can expect an exceptional program with clinical learning experiences geared specifically toward them,” he said.

Established in 1927, SJMO is a long-time leader in healthcare in Oakland County, Michigan. A 443-bed comprehensive community and teaching hospital, SJMO is ranked in the top five percent of hospitals across the nation for clinical excellence.
