FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Grand Bahama Island is still considered a hot spot for Sports Tourism, having been selected to host the proposed Island Relays Bahamas.
Founder of the event Joyce Johnson and group toured several sites including hotels, local restaurants and the Grand Bahama Sports Complex, which they have identified as the venue for a collegiate event scheduled for March 18-20, 2022. This proposed event is garnering interest from colleges and professional athletes in the Florida market and is expected to become an annual event for Grand Bahama.
CEO of Joyce Johnson Enterprises, Johnson noted, “We chose Grand Bahama because we want to be able to create an impact and establish partnerships with local businesses and communities, as well as this is a great opportunity for local athletes to be recognized and recruited by HBCU and Ivy League Colleges.”
Sports Tourism is a growing sector within the Tourism Industry, and General Manager of the Ministry of Tourism & Aviation – Grand Bahama, Steven Johnson, added, “The Ministry of Tourism is pleased that Joyce Johnson and team are interested in facilitating this event. It will contribute to economic stability for Grand Bahama as track & field is a sport that continues to grow.”
During the three-day event, local athletes will be provided the opportunity to showcase their talents. It is also important that athletes maintain their academics in order to be recognized and recruited by HBCU and Ivy League Colleges.
District Superintendent of the Ministry of Education, Ivan Butler, said, “We are happy to hear about this initiative. Any opportunity that allows our students to obtain scholarships is a worthwhile venture. Many of our high school students have not had the opportunity to showcase their talents thus far, and it is our hope that students and parents take full advantage of this opportunity.”
The Island Relays Bahamas Track &Field event will showcase competition by visiting collegiate and professional athletes and local high school athletes, track clubs and professional athletes throughout The Bahamas.
