The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement responding to Chester Cooper’s comments regarding the government’s borrowing strategy to mitigate revenue setbacks of Hurricane Dorian:

“One of the old and tired Brave Davis chief henchmen, the loquacious Chester Cooper, never fails to attack the FNM government, even as the sound fiscal strategy is combating the deficit the PLP left behind. It’s astounding to think that Cooper is offering fiscal advice. It was his party while last in office, the woeful PLP government, that stood by to watch our deficit explode.

“Following a natural disaster of historic magnitude and impact, the government’s obstacles to hit projected revenue targets should be self-evident. The only thing lazy in this instance is Cooper’s revisionist and weak comparison of the PLP’s recovery effort after Hurricane Matthew to the FNM’s current efforts.

“Loquacious Cooper seems to forget, under the disastrous PLP administration, deficits grew while PLP attempts at recovery and reconstruction after Hurricane Matthew were swallowed up in corruption and mismanaged at every turn, forcing families and business owners to fend for themselves. Bahamians know very well that a recovery effort of this magnitude comes with financial impact.

“Missing funds, incomplete repairs and neglected infrastructure along with major deficits were the unfortunate results of the PLP’s corrupt and incompetent disaster recovery effort. Where was the loquacious Cooper when the incompetent PLP hurt so many Bahamians by mismanaging and then neglecting the Hurricane Mathew recovery effort?

“Under our Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis, immediate action was taken to get families back on their feet and to mitigate the financial losses for businesses and entrepreneurs after Hurricane Dorian. As the Minnis administration has provided immediate action, it is setting a new standard for transparency and accountability during the recovery efforts.

“Our nation needs leaders like Prime Minister Minnis who take the necessary actions to provide a recovery focused on helping Bahamians restore their lives. Additionally, all Bahamians should take solace in knowing the woeful PLP’s corruption won’t be repeated during this disaster recovery effort. Our FNM government will continue working for the people to move The Bahamas forward so all have more opportunity and future prosperity, because the Bahamian people expect nothing less from their elected leaders”
