The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) called for a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Hubert Minnis on July 16, 2019 following damning revelations on the circumstances surrounding the award of a contract to a sitting Cabinet Minister.

We urged the Leader of the Official Opposition to exercise his constitutional duties for which he is paid by taxpayers in The Bahamas. After months of delay, the Hon. Philip Davis has given notice of his intention to move this important motion in the House of Assembly on December 11, 2019. The Leader of the Official Opposition faces a tall order and what many believe is an impossible task. However, we submit that a failed vote of ‘no confidence' in the Prime Minister will only confirm to the Bahamian people that the majority of our parliamentarians endorse corruption and lack integrity.

On the eve of the movement of a motion of no confidence in arguably the most divisive, hypocritical and arrogant Prime Minister in recent memory, the DNA submits the following charges against the PM on behalf of the Bahamian people:

  1.     Misleading the House of Assembly and the Bahamian people on the discussions and negotiations held with Mr. Brent Symonette in relation to the rental of the Town Centre Mall and the post office deal.
  2.     Misleading the House of Assembly and the Bahamian people on the circumstances surrounding the signing of the OBAN deal while being a party to a fraudulent signing ceremony. Failure to explain the missing OBAN files and the controversial transfer of the BEST Commission to the Office of the Prime Minister.
  3.     Misleading the Bahamian people by opposing the imposition of a regressive Value Added Tax (VAT) while in opposition but increasing the rate by 60% upon assuming office.
  4.     Misleading the Bahamian people by opposing the enactment of the Communications Bill otherwise called the Spy Bill while in opposition and passing the same legislation upon assuming office.
  5.     Presiding over a Cabinet that consists of Cabinet Ministers that have been judicially condemned by the Courts for egregious behavior and refusing to take disciplinary actions against said Ministers.
  6.     Presiding over the worst period of blackouts and load shedding in the modern history of The Bahamas, failing to investigate the scandals at Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) and seeking to put $650 million debt burden on current and future Bahamians.
  7.     Presiding over the worst response to a natural disaster in Bahamian history, failing to fulfill his responsibilities as Minister responsible for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) before, during and after Hurricane Dorian. This following a complete abandonment of the people of Ragged Island after the devastation of hurricane Irma.
  8.     Presiding over the worst period for the financial services industry in recent history, overseeing actions and inactions leading to the blacklisting of The Bahamas by multiple international agencies and jurisdictions.
  9.     Endorsing conflicts of interest and unethical conduct within the current administration while failing to fully implement the Freedom of Information Act, Integrity Commission Bill and Whistleblower legislation and Campaign Finance legislation to institute good governance in The Bahamas.
  10.     Mismanagement of the Bahamian economy, increasing the cost of living and poverty levels, disrespecting Bahamian workers and consistent attack on the Fourth Estate.

All eyes will be on Parliamentarians to see if any of them will stand on principle and on behalf of the Bahamian people. We will see the true measure of the men and women we have elected to represent us. Integrity, conviction and character will be tested among men and women to see whether they will place country above self and political party. Will they fail the Bahamian people as they have done in times past? Will they sing the praises of a Prime Minister that has lost the confidence of the electorate like they did for the Speaker of the House?

Notwithstanding the outcome of the no confidence vote, PM Minnis’ legacy will be tainted by actions as leader of our nation while the masses were oppressed, governance and policies favored special interest groups and conflicts of interest was the order of the day. The records will reflect that the people lost confidence in him and the Hansard will bear witness to a motion to end his reign as leader or representative of the people.
