The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the newly discovered PLP computer scandal:

“The woeful PLP’s reign may be long over, but the wounds caused by their disastrous time in office continue to cost taxpayers, limit opportunity and prevent progress. It was just last week that a Dutch investigation implicated the Christie Administration in a bribery scandal. This week it was revealed that during the Christie Administration the Public Hospitals Authority paid a vendor millions to update the hospitals’ technology by digitalizing patient records but failed to make any progress.

“The bid process followed the same worn-out track record for the woeful PLP – full of discrepancies and contradictions.  Wherein the contracted vendor was 11 days late in submitting their bid from the original cut-off period, miraculously they won the contract regardless. Likewise, the negotiation itself displayed the typical PLP’s incompetence. As The Tribune reports, the contractual terms provide that the cost could have escalated over the 10-year contract and some estimates put the total cost as high as $48 million. And as is typical for a PLP endeavour, there was no value to show for it.

“Knowing there was no value rendered for the payments, the woeful PLP didn’t call for accountability. No, they continued paying the vendor. And while concerns were raised by some in the health department at the time, as is accustomed of the woeful PLP, they were dismissed and ignored out of hand.

“After turning corruption into an artform under their regime, the PLP now stands in adamant opposition to any and all efforts by the Minnis Administration to take proactive measures to reform government making it more accountable and transparent to the people it serves. Baseless criticism and empty rhetoric have now become the policy agenda of the woeful PLP.  But recent scandals that continue to be uncovered today, like at the Public Hospitals Authority, should serve as a stark reminder to some of the reasons these reforms are necessary. Our Prime Minister – Dr. Hubert Minnis – believes every Bahamian deserves a government that is responsible and accountable to its people and the FNM will continue seeking improvements toward a more ethical government.

“The FNM will continue to expose the PLP’s corruption, as to demonstrate the importance and relevance of the Prime Minister’s vision for government reforms, and the FNM will continue supporting our government’s effort to put corruption in the history books, because Bahamians deserve nothing less from their elected leaders.”
