Nassau, Bahamas - Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the current deficit projection:

“Once again this Government is spending more money than we have. The latest news that we are running $100 million over our projected deficit is both troubling and frightening to the Bahamian tax payers who will ultimately have to foot the bill. This government continues to spend recklessly and without concern for how they will pay for all of this borrowing. This is what happens when they are more focused on enriching themselves at the people’s expense.”

“They have bailed out the Bank of The Bahamas on the backs of hard working Bahamians and they continue to use it as their own piggy banks. They have promised us thousands of jobs with the Baha Mar Project which sits empty and still cost taxpayers upwards of $40 million a year.

They have no answers for the rapidly rising murder rate which has hit historic highs in each of the last two years. The only thing that they have succeeded in is rewarding lucrative government contracts to their friends, allies and family members.

“Clearly, this Government is more intent on enriching itself than fixing our country. And we all know that you can’t fix a problem when you continue to ignore it.”
