 The Free National Movement issued the following statement regarding Monday’s resolution by Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis to extend the state of emergency to April 8:
“As the severity of the COVID-19 situation grows, elected leaders around the world are enacting responses in effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Our Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, has acted swiftly, effectively and thoughtfully, serving as a calming presence to all Bahamians as we deal with this growing, global pandemic together.
“All leaders walk a fine line in doing what is necessary to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, while mitigating the undoubted economic setbacks. Prime Minister Minnis has been quick to implement necessary restrictions, such as sheltering in place and closing non-essential business, to protect our families and communities. The Prime Minister is striking the right balance to ensure we are positioned to mitigate the long-term consequences of the virus. The FNM applauds the Administration’s resolution to extend the state of emergency and provide stricter enforcement of the current restrictions.
“Our Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, also stated that the Government will soon announce measures to provide financial relief for those struggling to pay rent and for those who are out of work due to the current state of emergency. The Minister of Finance announced additional social assistance measures today to help Bahamians.
“The Prime Minister understands the importance of finding ways to relieve the economic hardships brought about by the pandemic, and while much work remains the Government will continue working to soften the financial blow that will unfortunately affect us as it affects the rest of the world.
“The FNM thanks Prime Minister Minnis for demonstrating the leadership we needed from day one and are encouraged that the PLP has recognized his effort to unite the country during this crisis. Our hope is that all Bahamians, including our elected, civil and religious leaders, will continue to work in solidarity so that we can work together for the greater good of The Bahamas. This pandemic will pass, and the measures and steps the Prime Minister is laying out will help to hasten us to that day. The hardships left won’t last nearly as long if we continue to work together, as Bahamians deserve nothing less from their elected leaders.”
