The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the PLP’s mounting effort to belittle the international community’s contribution to The Bahamas’ recovery effort:

“A catastrophic hurricane slammed into The Bahamas, bringing damage of biblical proportions to some of our islands. Our Government led by our Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis swung into action and continues to work every angle to help the victims of this terrible hurricane as they start what will be a long recovery.

“The Minnis Administration not only committed to helping all the families and businesses over the long term. It pledged to do it with the transparency and accountability that was missing in past recovery efforts – including after Hurricane Matthew under the woeful PLP.

“Unfortunately, after Hurricane Dorian hit it only took the Opposition days to put on their partisan hats and launch a series of non-sensical and illogical attacks even as people were still in harm’s way. And true to form, the woeful PLP position has never wavered: always on the attack and absent of solutions and any desire to work together to help our countrymen.

“Conveniently, they also forgot their past actions in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew when many of their members seemed hellbent on helping themselves at the people’s expense. It is still unclear what they did with the Hurricane Matthew recovery funds.

“The international community took notice. They also took notice of the Minnis Administration’s reform efforts that have brought higher standards of transparency and accountability to Government. We are seeing that in the offers of support for our recovery efforts. Reasonable observers would see the Hurricane Dorian Pledge Conference as a success in bringing the attention and assistance of the international community to help our country.

“The fact is the FNM Government is working together with volunteers, governments and NGOs to bring about a full and comprehensive recovery effort for The Bahamas, even as we continue to lack the important partnership with the only other major political party in our country – the woeful PLP.

“Regardless of the woeful PLP’s nonsensical and misguided rhetoric concerning the pledge conference, the Minnis Administration will continue to work with all individuals and organizations wanting to help Bahamians, giving a critical eye to any and all offers to make sure they would help those in need. We know the people deserve nothing less from their leaders.”
