The Free National Movement issued the following statement regarding the PLP’s recent proposals regarding quarantined people:

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis, the FNM Government has spared no time or resources in implementing and executing a robust COVID-19 response and containment effort. From the ground up, the Minnis Administration has built a strategy of prevention, based on the available facts, and focusing the country on the mission of saving lives while seeking to lessen the long-term economic impact that this global pandemic will cause.

“From the earliest onset of COVID-19, Prime Minister Minnis enacted strict travel regulations, instituted physical distancing policies, put the nation on lockdown and enacted necessary quarantine measures. Yet despite numerous examples around the world showing failure to act drastically increases deaths, early on it was the PLP that launched into criticisms of the efforts even labeling early directives as fearmongering and suggesting our Government was going too far in trying to prevent the spread.

“Thankfully the Prime Minister cast these criticisms aside and focused on the task at hand – uniting the country in this deadly fight against this invisible enemy. His leadership has encouraged everyone to work together toward solutions, and that spirit of collaboration is helping to guide most Bahamians.

“It seems the PLP has now come full circle from its initial public criticisms but still struggles to work together with others to implement solutions. Forced monitoring of every Bahamian through a phone app without fully vetting the idea could cause unintended consequences that could do more harm than good. While the Administration thinks technology can play a role in fighting the spread, it must be done in the right way.

“It’s the people’s hope that the PLP will seek to bring ideas to the table, but do it the spirit of collaboration as we try to fight this deadly virus together. The FNM thinks we must continue to work together in our fight to save lives while striking the right balance for the public, because we know Bahamians deserve nothing less from their elected leaders.”
