Nassau, Bahamas - Gadville McDonald, Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador Candidate for the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement titled, Cat Island needing results not excuses from the PLP Government:

“It has been with much concern that we witness the mass confusion and disorganization of this inept PLP Government that has continued to constantly hurt our Family Islands. Just last week, the Minister of Transport faced the cries of business houses in Cat Island that essential services are not being provided in a timely manner due to the failures of mailboat system.

“The response of the Minister did nothing to calm the concerns of the business owners though.  She tried making the excuse that the PLP Government‘s response would require a “revamp and revisit” of an entire mailboat system.  Her lame excuses are clear that nothing can be done unless the policies are revamped.  The Bahamian people are tired of hearing the PLP’s empty rhetoric and broken promises.

“It is clearly unacceptable that this Government cannot do anything to help these Bahamians while huge tax free giveaways are being extended to the Chinese.  Businesses in Cat Island are being ignored as they face loss of business while Chinese businesses are being promoted.
A revisit to Government policy is an inadequate response. The Government must move to resolve this problem and commission added services to offset the needs of Cat Islanders. This does not require a “revamp of policy”, it entails an immediate display of concern for people.

“It is the people’s time!  The Minister’s response underscore the need for change and a new government committed to the growth of each family island.

“Cat Island businesses should be encouraged in their efforts and should enjoy a strong partnership with a sensitive government that focus on results and improving the life of all citizens rather than one who seeks to provide lame excuses for their failures.

“For too long Family Island Communities like Cat Island have been treated like orphans who have to beg for hand-outs and assistance with essential services that should be provided on a constant basis.

“The FNM is committed to ensuring that each Island is granted the essential services needed to assist in its overall growth and development. Our new policy of Island Development Rights will create a new culture where each island has the right to its own development and growth.  This improved and empowered form of local government will offer a unique partnership with locals guaranteeing their involvement in resolving local issues and producing the results needed.

“It is truly the people’s time! Change is coming!”
