While many are attempting to gain ratification to run in the upcoming general elections, what should be considered most is: What have they done for the people they wish to serve?

According to the Committee to elect Lewis E. Astwood Jr., their candidate has not just come on the political scene, but has been present for a number of years. He has done much for the people in the Eight Mile Rock area, which falls under the Central Grand Bahama Constituency.

In 2009, said a spokesperson for the Committee, Mr. Astwood was on Ortland Bodie’s Real Talk Live, on More 94 FM, when spoke of a number of issues he would address if elected. Today, some of these things are being not only addressed, but implemented: National Health Insurance, an Apprentice Programme (now known as the 52 week programme), extending the hours at the Eight Mile Rock clinic and eventually a 24/7 hospital. In addition, he spoke about the demolition of the old shopping center across from Pinedale and erecting a government complex, which is being realized today. That is vision and leadership.

Additionally, many might not know to-date Mr. Astwood has proven himself with his food programme where he has been feeding hundreds of people over the past nine (9) years, as well as assisting them with clothing. He hasn’t just started working in the community he hopes to represent. This is a programme that still exists today.

He has always lent a helping hand. He established an organization, Building Men for the Future (BMF) where he speaks with young men and women on how to become productive citizens of our country. Establishing the first School for the Blind in Eight Mile Rock was also one of Mr. Astwood’s achievements. He started it in his own building, and would pickup and drop off students. The school has since been moved and is currently located in one of the rooms at Ruby Swiss Restaurant.

The hopeful candidate has this to say, “I Lewis Astwood Jr. pray that you would find some hope, strength, and courage to stand with me, walk with me, and fight with me for a better life for our families and ourselves. This is not the time to be weak in mind, body and soul.

“If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. Proverbs 24:10.
This means that, because of suffering, persecution, afflictions and calamities that are associated with being a voice for the poor, the weak and the voiceless, most politicians would be afraid to speak truth about the suffering and degradation of God‘s people, the Bahamian People! I Lewis Astwood Jr. will never be afraid to fight for a better life for the Bahamian people in and out of po

“Let us put politics aside for a moment. This is not about the PLP, FNM or DNA. When we vote we must vote for individual men and women who we know will fight for policies that will allow us to feed, cloth, shelter ourselves, and to live and work with dignity. This time, it must not be business as usual. This time, it’s about making available to all Bahamians the opportunity to move from poverty to prosperity.

“I know for a fact that Central G.B/E.M.R is long overdue for a facelift, and some substantive things to happen, that would ascend our people from poverty into prosperity, and where we as a people can live in dignity.”

Continues Mr. Astwood, “This is why I believe this question should be asked of all, who say they would like to serve and lead; ‘What is your Vision and what have you done to better the lives of the Bahamian people?”

From the Eight Mile Rock area, Mr. Astwood is the son of former Minister of Works, Utilities and Immigration in Turks and Caicos, the Hon. Lewis Astwood Sr., and former maid at the Jack Tar Hotel, in West End, Grand Bahama, the late Dorine Martin.

He was educated in Grand Bahama, the Turks and Caicos Islands and Canada.

The Committee spokesperson added, “We have been working throughout the community assisting the residents where possible. We hope that Lewis Astwood is the man to be elected for Central Grand Bahama in the upcoming general election. Not only is he a servant of the people, he is a leader with a vision.”

“We will rise from poverty to prosperity”
