Nassau, Bahamas - Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the Baha Mar deal:

“For months Bahamians listened as the embattled Prime Minister repeatedly promised that he would soon reveal details on the secret Baha Mar deal. Yet, the courts still shield his deal in secrecy as the details drip out slowly to the public. Now Bahamians are learning that his Government has exempted his Chinese allies working on the project from the onerous VAT, yet the Prime Minister remains suspiciously quiet on the details of the secret Baha Mar deal that he struck with his Chinese allies. If the Prime Minister was really in favour of transparency and accountability as he claims, he would immediately release all details related to the secret deal instead of remaining silent.”

“The embattled Prime Minister’s stonewalling tactics leave the people with many more questions than answers. We don’t know if stamp tax was collected on the sale to Perfect Luck Holdings Ltd, or will the stamp tax be collected on the ultimate sale of Baha Mar to CTFE? What will the final cost of the project be to the Bahamian people? Can we expect more secretive tax exemptions to drip out in the future? There are so many unanswered questions, yet deafening silence from the one person that should have the answers.”

“Bahamians know they deserve better and understand we will never achieve true transparency or accountability while the embattled Prime Minister Christie remains in charge. Deals shrouded in secrecy and then sealed by the courts on behalf of this Government have no place in Bahamian society. The FNM will put an end to the secrecy and backroom deals under our Government. When the PLP is removed from power this next election, then the people will finally have their time and the FNM will work every day to serve them.”
