The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the current challenges to BPL as it relates to the PLP’s years of neglect:

“Since taking office in 2017, our Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis and the FNM government has aggressively worked to reverse the shortcomings of the previous PLP tenure – including seeking to put an end the rampant corruption witnessed under the PLP as well the numerous broken promises that they made to Bahamians. For five years, the PLP talked about their ‘plans’ – plans to build a new landfill, plans to increase education funding, plans to improve infrastructure and grow jobs. These projects are getting done now under the leadership of Dr. Minnis and his Administration.  They said they were going to focus on getting these things done and they are getting results.

“One objective that remains, and presents a particular challenge to this day, is the disastrous state the BPL was left in.  Years of neglect and mismanagement have compounded decades of poor decisions leaving a wasteland of dilapidated facilities and aging generators that lack proper maintenance and servicing.  The incompetent PLP Government knew they were operating outdated, and in some cases decades old equipment, but they chose to turn a blind eye to the growing problems – which has only made the situation the current government inherited far worse.

“Continual load shedding is the result of their failed leadership – but to hear their cat calls now, you’d think they left BPL in the state of mint condition.  That notion couldn’t be further from the truth with everyday Bahamians and businesses suffering the consequences of the PLP’s neglect and incompetence.  In fact, years of public backlash were all but ignored by the PLP as they continued kicking the can down the road as they dodged responsibility.

“Bahamians will see results as Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis is determined to transform BPL’s facilities for the long term with a goal of more consistent and affordable energy for all consumers. Our FNM Administration is taking action that the PLP refused for years. By the year’s end, the 132 MW power plant is targeted to be up and running.  This is the first of several phases of upgrades, which includes incorporating natural gas, a cleaner and less expensive option for consumers.

“Much work remains for our government, but one thing is sure: When problems arise, the FNM has proven they will take action and get results. The Minnis Administration realized the importance of transforming BPL and taking steps to do so to avoid further crisis like Bahamians suffered through this summer. The Minnis Administration will continue pursuing long-term, sustainable improvements to energy, infrastructure and the job market so that all Bahamians have more opportunity and a higher standard of living because the Bahamian people deserve nothing less from their leaders.”
