Nassau, Bahamas - Opposition Leader the Hon. Dr.  Hubert A. Minnis, during a press conference held on Monday, May 12, 2014, at FNM Headquarters, questioned the ‘‘Legality of the National Intelligence Agency.”  The organization he said is working outside the framework of the law.  Dr. Minnis told the media that someone in the Government must be accountable for how law enforcement agencies conduct themselves in our country.  He said that these agencies all operate under statute law and that in all cases, uniform heads are responsible to an elected Cabinet Minister.

“The FNM is very concerned that at a time of high crime in our communities and playing on the fears of crime among many in the public, the Government has elected to administratively create an intelligence gathering agency outside of the legal framework of the land.  This is unwarranted and could be dangerous’, Dr. Minnis said.  Dr. Minnis called for the Government of The Bahamas to provide to the Bahamian people full disclosure of the mission and modus operandi of the National Intelligence Agency.  Once again, Dr. Minnis called for the Freedom of Information Act to be legislated.
