Freeport, Bahamas - The Democratic National Alliance held a press conference today in Grand Bahama to ratify three candidates: Elkanah Pinder, Leslie Lightbourne and Nevar Smith. The following are remarks made by new DNA candidate Nevar Smith for Marco City:

A pleasant good afternoon to one and all, today is indeed a great day! Firstly, I’d like to thank our leader Mr. Branville McCartney and the entire executive team of the DNA for giving me as a young Bahamian this opportunity to represent my generation here today as a candidate for national office. By affording me such an opportunity the DNA has proven once again that it deeply believes in the potential of our nation’s youth, and views us as an important part of the national development process. We must never put our youth in a box and size them up based on who their parents are or where they’ve come from. This is why I’m more than elated to let the nation know that I am proud to be a member of the DNA and by extension it’s standard bearer in the Marco City Constituency. I have every reason to believe that Marco City will go GREEN GREEN GREEN in 2017!!

We all know that Grand Bahama’s economy has been struggling to catch itself and experience substantive growth for some time now. In spite of the economic and unemployment challenges that Grand Bahamians have endured through successive PLP & FNM administrations there is still much to be hopeful about going forward. No longer do Grand Bahamians have to settle for the lack luster performance of FNM and the PLP in the governance of their affairs. The DNA now provides all Bahamians across the length and breadth of this country with a viable, creditable and dynamic alternative that has the ability to usher in the long awaited transformation our nation is in need of. WE THE PEOPLE NO LONGER HAVE TO SETTLE!!!

The DNA represents a brand new era of political governance and development in our beloved country. As I move around the island of Grand Bahama from west to east I constantly hear people say that they would like to see the emergence of new, fresh faces come to the fore front who are not a part of the political organizations that got us in the mess we are in today. My friends, the wait is over and your prayers have been answered. The DNA provides the Bahamian people with that fresh, new team of talented men and women who are prepared to challenge the established political parties that have let us down over and over again. Grand Bahama, we’ve given the red and the yellow a try, it’s now time to go green in 2017!!

BIO OF NEVAR SMITH MARCO CITY

Born June 18, 1987 to Lionel and Clarice Smith, 29 year old Nevar L. Smith began his journey to frontline politics as a student of the College of the Bahamas, where received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Tourism Management. During his time with the institution, Smith was given the opportunity to serve as the Executive Vice President of the College of the Bahamas Union of Students (COBUS) at the Northern Campus in Freeport from 2007-2008. He would later go on to hold the position a second time around, this time at the College’s main campus in Nassau from 2010-2011. It was there that he was able to hone his skills as an orator, negotiator and activist becoming responsible for spearheading and executing any number of student based initiatives. He is currently the president of the Grand Bahama Chapter of the COB Alumni Association and was recognized by the Commonwealth Secretariat as one of the most outstanding youth leaders in the Caribbean region for 2015.

Over the course of his life, Smith has drawn great inspiration from the Challenge laid out by the great Mahatma Gandhi, to 'Be the changethat you wish to see in the world” and he has attempted to live his own life by that mantra.

At an early age, Nevar developed and displayed a passion for issues affecting young Bahamians, having served as a member of both the National Youth Policy Team and the National Youth Advisory Council. That passion eventually led to found the Bahamas Youth Movement (BYM) an organization designed to bring young people together with a view to finding creative ways to make positive contributions to their various communities and by extension the country as a whole. In 2012 he parlayed his work with young people into a radio show called “Youth Expressions” which has, and continues to serve as one of the only youth run talk radio programs on Grand Bahama Island, further cementing his reputation as a certified youth leader, and mentor.

Nevar’s leadership ability and his work fighting for and with young people grabbed the attention of residents in the East Grand Bahama constituency who elected him as their local government representative and was also elected by his Council Colleagues to serve as the Deputy Chief Councilor for the City of Freeport. In his capacity as a Councilman, Smith’s portfolio responsibilities include youth, sports & business development within the City of Freeport.
