Nassau, Bahamas -
The following is a press statement by Bradley B. Roberts
National Chairman
Progressive Liberal Party:
I refer to a video posted in social media depicting a brutish, barbaric and unprovoked attack on two young men in Historic Bain’s Town Community.
I am being advised that various anti-gay slurs and obscenities were hurled at these two young victims during the attack; the victims have reportedly received medical attention for their sustained injuries.
On the face of it, this violent attack appears to be a crime of hate.
This video has gone viral internationally and does not reflect the tenets, ethos and culture of The Bahamas. We are not an intolerant people and our modern social and political development is based on our noble and just fight against bigotry, suppression, ignorance and intolerance.
The Progressive Liberal Party condemns all forms of violence, but unprovoked mob violence and crimes fueled by hate and bigotry are particularly heinous. The inflammatory vitriol and hate filled rhetoric that various groups have spew on social media could have unintended consequences and inflict collateral damage in the form of hate crimes as these groups advance their misguided agenda against the upcoming Gender Equality Referendum.
I CALL ON THESE INDIVIDUALS TO CEASE AND DESIST IN THE COUNTRY’S INTEREST!
I characterize these groups as misguided because their issues have absolutely nothing to do with the referendum questions currently before the Bahamian electorate.
We cannot live in a country where innocent people are subject to crimes of violence and mob attack and the perpetrators feel that they are justified in their disgusting criminality because of cleverly worded ‘dog whistles’ and ‘code language’ designed to cause incitement.
The PLP calls for the fullest investigation by the Royal Bahamas Police Force into this dastardly act and we would expect the perpetrators to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
We send our re-assurances to the international community that the Bahamian people are not barbaric and violent. This is an isolated act. We assure the global tourism market and community that The Bahamas is still a safe place to visit and enjoy.
Cowardly acts of this nature are intolerable and the PLP has every confidence that the perpetrators will be swiftly caught and swiftly punished.
