Sidney Collie, Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman, issued the following statement regarding the Fyre Festival scam in Exuma:

“Hundreds of visitors to the Bahamas were horrified after arriving to Exuma for a music festival but finding nothing but disaster relief tents and a half-built stage. Attendees were said to have paid hundreds to thousands for their entertainment experience but instead found the living arrangements they had booked unavailable.  Needless to say, none of the booked performers arrived, as the festival had clearly turned into a disaster.

“While the Ministry of Tourism stated they were not a sponsor of this event, they admitted to having prior knowledge of the event and assisted in communications channels with other government agencies on the Fyre Festival’s behalf. The question before us is how Minister of Tourism Obediah Wilchcombe allowed this embarrassment to our country to take place on his watch.

“The ministry should have acted prudently in assuring an infrastructure was adequate to host hundreds of visitors from all over the world. Not only did the event lack adequate living arrangements, visitors were stranded from leaving the Island for hours upon hours. Obediah failed to vet this widely-advertised event in the Bahamas and as a result hundreds of visitors are leaving with the memory of an awful experience.

“The Bahamas cannot risk another five years of a PLP government that harms our tourism product with their incompetence and lack of leadership”.
