The Torchbearers Youth Association (“TYA”) has noted that there is a lot of talk going on about corruption. There are many accusations being thrown around. In fact many MPs have used their Parliamentary Privilege as a shield to hide behind as they hurl these accusations and vitriolic comments. After all of this though, we are no closer to the truth than we started. What we do know is that the PLP has had so much practice with corruption over the years that they have mastered the art of supposedly getting away with it. Not anymore though. TYA has them figured out and we will explain exactly how they try to get away with it!

Same play, different actors.

Many people sit in amazement wondering how this PLP government is still in power after so many scandals and missteps. How come their supporters have not risen up and demanded more from their MPs? We in the TYA have come to the conclusion that the PLP has simply been through this process so many times that they have perfected their art. They have been through the process of scandals and corruption so many times that navigating those waters has become second nature for many of its seasoned politicians and senior party members. The script to being corrupt and getting away with it in the PLP was one that was written back in 1984 after the Commission of Inquiry. The precedent that the PLP set back in the 1980s was to simply ignore corruption. Through their actions, they stated clearly that Bahamians must love a political party more than it hates corruption and so accountability is of little significance to the PLP. The TYA and the FNM does not share this belief. We have always opposed it, because we know that it is detrimental to the progress of our country. The FNM does not tolerate any form of corruption; we don’t just say it though. We show it in our actions.

Actions speak louder than words. Every politician from every party will tell you that they are against corruption - PLPs included. The PLP will say they hate corruption, but their words mean nothing because they will never do a thing about it. They will never hold their elite members accountable. Just think about it, was Brave Davis held accountable for the BAMSI building that burnt down without insurance? Was Alfred Gray held accountable for blatantly interfering in the judicial process? Was Jerome Fitzgerald held accountable for dropping the case against an accused gun smuggler or for refusing to notify residents of Marathon about an oil spill that could have possibly poisoned them? Was anyone held accountable for not presenting proper accounting on last year’s “Junkanoo-Carnival”? The answer is consistently no.

The PLP way

Instead, what they do is:

1) Retreat into the shadows and sit silently. The person who is caught red handed in the midst of a scandal immediately stops speaking. They don’t answer questions from the media, from the opposition or from Bahamians. They ignore everyone.

2) Senior members in the party rise up and start to blame everyone. Whenever one of their elite friends is caught, all of the other MPs rise up and start to blame everyone. They will blame everyone except he/she who is guilty. They blame the FNM, they blame the media, and they blame you, your mother, your brother, your neighbor and your unborn child in an attempt to muddy the water and draw attention away from themselves!

3) Bradley Roberts, the Donald Trump of The Bahamas writes a Press Release attacking someone personally while offering nothing of substance. As astute a politician and businessman as Mr. Roberts claims to be, he continues to spew vitriolic and hateful remarks to anyone that stands in the way of his and his party’s agenda. He continues to prey on the fears and ignorance of the most vulnerable in society, with no consideration to how his actions hinder both progress and the democratic process. He has been aptly described by many outraged and concerned citizens as a ‘Yesterday Man’, and we in the TYA seek to usher he and his backwards and backwater thinking into the past where he belongs.

4) Get caught in another scandal or corrupt act. There is strong evidence to suggest that the PLP’s answer to one scandal is to create another scandal! There are so many balls in the air at once with the PLP that the Bahamian public and media find it nearly impossible to juggle them all. Their scandals have overwhelmed us, and we must do away with them.

5) Rinse and Repeat. The PLP, with all its talk of believing in Bahamians and focusing on the youth of this country, has failed even to open the doors for those in their own party – save for their offspring and ‘extended family’. Every five years they parade the usual suspects, some of which include: V. Alfred Gray, Allyson Maynard-Gibson, Philip Davis, Bernard Nottage, and of course…PM Perry Gladstone Christie!

This is the PLP way. We guarantee that the next time something happens with the PLP, they will follow these steps. You don’t have to take our word for it though, watch their actions.
