The Christmas Season is in full swing: you can tell by the way that the marathon mall is packed with customers rushing to get their gifts before Christmas day. While this certainly is a time to be grateful that we can each enjoy the season with people we love, we cannot for one moment forget the callous reality that is our economy.

The Bahamas’ growing unemployment is troubling. It has, without relief, become an infection that will rot the very core of our society. It is a social problem that is going untreated in our nation. The weak job market for the skilled recent college graduates is making it difficult to find employment out of college. The last report of the Market Information Newsletter stated that youth unemployment remained at thirty percent (30%) despite the government’s effort to improve the College of the Bahamas to University Status. Without the market to accept the students graduating, these efforts will go in vain and our educated youth will practice their skills, elsewhere, in other countries.

There is an unstinting need for innovative and creative young minds to break into new markets in our society, but more than ever, there needs to be a government that supports these young people. There needs to be a government that will train the large number of unskilled unemployed Bahamians. There needs to be an effective plan put in place so that by next Christmas morning, these youths are not sitting staring at an empty Christmas tree. The Democratic National Alliance has outlined plans to do all of this during their time as your Government.

The Democratic National Alliance is the party that is committed to increasing employment for young Bahamians. The Vison of the DNA for 2012 and beyond outlines the many ways that the party plans to do this. Among these plans outlined, the DNA intends to diversify the economy through investing in local talent and entertainment, agriculture, and the manufacturing industry. As the Bahamian Government, the DNA plans to provide high quality educational systems that will ensure that the young Bahamians will be market ready when they enter into the working world. Under this regime, the large number of unemployed Bahamians is sure to decrease.

Fixing the unemployment problem will ensure that Bahamians will receive a better lifestyle, however, reducing the cost of living will also increase the quality of life throughout the nation. The DNA will achieve this by reducing the energy bills by using alternative energy to produce electricity, and introducing a more competitive banking system so that the cost of capital can be reduced. These strategies, among others that are outlined in the vision, will help local Bahamians to develop their own human capital.

Unemployment is one of the many problems that our government needs to tackle in order to create a sustainable society. It is one of the main problems that the Democratic National Alliance plans to eradicate under their leadership. If more jobs are provided to our people, there will be much more happy faces not only on Christmas mornings, but also throughout lifetimes.
