NASSAU, The Bahamas - The Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the Republic of Chile have pledged to continue to participate actively within the framework of the United Nations in matters relating to human rights, peace and security and economic and social development.
These pledges were made on the occasion of the presentation of Letters of Credence by His Excellency Eduardo Bonilla, Ambassador of the Republic of Chile to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas at Government House on Thursday, April 18, 2013.
His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes, Governor General, who accepted the Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of Chile, underscored the importance of relations between both countries.
“The strength of our bilateral relations is evidenced both by the skills development afforded by your country’s technical cooperation, as well as by the shared benefits from multilateralism. Nevertheless, we concur that opportunities exist to strengthen our relations,” he said.
Chile is Latin America’s fastest growing economy and is its most prosperous. It is a founding member of the United Nations, the first South American nation to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and to conclude a Trade Agreement with the People’s Republic of China to be among the first in environmental preservation such as its Sister Park Agreements with the United States.
Chile also provides opportunities for expanded technical cooperation for diversification of Bahamian trade, for financial services advantages and other investment in The Bahamas.
“Influence and insight are, equally indispensable attributes for effective diplomacy in a challenging as well as in a globalised world.
“Lessons learnt from your country’s focus and experience, especially in economic and trade negotiation can thus prove to be invaluable for The Bahamas as she navigates the accession process of the World Trade Organisation,” Sir Arthur said.
As a consequence, there is much, which can be tapped in both countries to consolidate and take bilateral relations to higher levels for mutual benefit, he said.
“Your broad and practical foreign service experience, including areas such as migration which represents ‘a two-edged sword’ for both our countries, give me confidence that you will succeed in bringing even greater substance to Bahamas-Chile relations,” Sir Arthur said.
The Bahamas and Chile have also been actively seeking to strengthen its cooperation in language training – Immersion Course in Spanish in Chile while continuing to promote areas such as international trade negotiations, diplomacy, agriculture, fishing and other fields of cooperation.
