Nassau , Bahamas - The following is a statement by Fred Mitchell, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the Miami protests:

We The Bahamas are caught in the middle of an ideological battle not of our making but something which is an accident of geography. The fact is, we sit between two countries who do not see eye to eye: one country being the object of destination for the other country's citizens.

Some citizens of Cuba are trying to get to the United States and enter our country illegally as a result.  They are often caught and detained. Their ultimate destination is the United States.  If they  are caught, they will be returned once all applicable laws and procedures have been followed.

The protesters should not then be turning their ire toward us, but should in the United States seek to persuade the authorities to allow their compatriots to come there if that is legally possible, not defame The Bahamas as a substitute for their misdirected anger.
