NASSAU,
The Bahamas – Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Fred
Mitchell greeted diplomats at the First Annual Bahamas Diplomatic Week Official
Welcome Reception at Luciano’s East Bay Street on Thursday, October 23, the eve
of United Nations Day. Attending the
reception were Bahamas Heads of Mission who are in Nassau for these events, and
resident representatives of many different countries.
Diplomatic
Week has comprised a number of social and working sessions for the diplomatic
community that have been mapped out to foster the spirit of international
cooperation Minister Mitchell points out is the key to present and future world
stability.
The
Minister said that morning at the Bahamas Diplomatic Week Official Opening at
Melia Nassau Beach Resort, that “The Bahamas joins the international community
in pursuing the widest possible cooperation on concrete initiatives that accept
that environmental trends are threatening to radically alter the planet and
that environmental threats and degradation can undermine economic development
and may indeed be an underlying factor of world poverty.
“There
is a new reality; one beset by global crises and alongside which is a
widespread feeling of fear and frustration concerning the global capacity to
deal with the formidable international issues that threaten international peace
and prosperity.
“The
Bahamas believes that positive developments in technology and science, for
instance, and trends towards establishing partnerships and cooperative
institutional arrangements, stimulate hope that the future may be more
prosperous and more secure. This will
take decisive political will, concrete action and a voluntary union of all
humankind.”
