Central Bank donates $150K for hurricane relief

NASSAU, The Bahamas - Thursday, October 20, 2016 was a day of giving towards the Hurricane Matthew relief and recovery efforts from the public and private sectors; one week after the powerful Hurricane Matthew passed through the country.

Separate ceremonies were held at the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, where in attendance were the Rt Hon Perry Christie, Prime Minister; the Hon Shane Gibson, the Minister Responsible for Hurricane Relief and Restoration; Captain Stephen Russell, Director of NEMA; His Excellency Jean Victor Geneus, Haitian Ambassador to The Bahamas and other officials.

Sebas Bastian of Island Cares Foundation donated 1,000 tarpaulin, 1,000 rolls of ice & water shield roofing material and 100 generators, which were shipped to Grand Bahama; all toward the hurricane Matthew relief and recovery efforts. The Central Bank Governor John Rolle presented $150,000 to the National Disaster Relief Committee. The cheque was accepted by Mike Maura, of that committee. The Bank also donated $50,000 to the Republic of Haiti, which also suffered damages and hundreds in death toll during the passage of Hurricane Matthew. And, Sebas Bastian of Island Cares Foundation donated 1,000 tarpaulins, 1,000 rolls of ice & water shield roofing material and 100 generators, which were shipped to Grand Bahama.

Mr. Rolle indicated that the funds were deposited to the account of the Bahamas Disaster Relief Fund at the Royal Bank of Canada. He said that the Bank also committed to match the financial donation of its staff up to a further combined total of $10,000.

The Prime Minister and Minister Gibson both expressed thanks to the donors for their generous donations towards restoring the lives of the thousands of residents impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

To the Haitian Ambassador, the Prime Minister said one can never give enough money, but the gesture was an indication that the prayers of The Bahamas will always be for Haiti’s well being.
