NASSAU, Bahamas – Effective this year, graduates of the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) will earn a certificate from BAMSI or a degree awarded by the College of The Bahamas (COB). Following the College’s transition to university status, students will be awarded a degree by the University of The Bahamas (UOB) in collaboration with BAMSI.

College President Dr. Rodney Smith and Dr. Godfrey Eneas, BAMSI President, made the announcement Tuesday, May 24, 2016 during a signing of Memorandum of Understanding between COB and BAMSI in the Harry C. Moore Library of the College of The Bahamas.

Dr. Smith said both institutions are committed to addressing the challenges articulated in the State of the Nation Report presented by Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie on April 11 at the Harry C. Moore Library, COB. He said they are confident that the collaboration will go a long way to assist in addressing food security in The Bahamas.

“As we realize growth at both the UOB and BAMSI, plans are that BAMSI will be the Centre of Excellence focused on agriculture, marine sciences and aquaponics. We are not in competition with each other,” said Dr. Smith.

“We will have a collaborative partnership for the full benefit for the entire country. We envision that much of the research taking place at the Small Island Sustainability Research Complex, for which ground was recently broken, will help in the refinement process for massive production of food supplies.”

Dr. Smith said it is expected that faculty and students at the SIS Research Complex and BAMSI will bring new expertise to the field of Bahamian agriculture and to the knowledge and practice of marine sciences in The Bahamas.

Dr. Eneas said the signing of the MOU marks a “new era” in the development of tertiary education in The Bahamas.

“We are here this afternoon because the President of COB, Dr. Rodney Smith and his team have reviewed our syllabus, studied our curricula and have concluded that we are not only on the right track but COB is prepared to authenticate our degree, certificates and diplomas as well as legitimate our standing as a tertiary academic institution,” said Dr. Eneas.

Over 100 students are expected to enroll in BAMSI in the new academic year beginning September 2016.
