Nassau, The Bahamas – Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell, Wednesday toured the facilities at the Pitt Road Outreach Centre where he met with staff of the Department of Social Services. Minister Campbell also met with clients of the Outreach Centre.

The visit was part of Minister Campbell’s promise to use the break in the proceedings of the House of Assembly to complete field trips to the various social services and urban development locations throughout The Bahamas in order to hold face-to-face meetings with staff, while also using the opportunity to meet with residents and clients in an effort to ensure continued efficiency of services.

The visit also allowed Minister Campbell to assess the Centre’s readiness pertaining to the Uniform Assistance Application process. Centres across The Bahamas are encouraging those Bahamians who may be in need of such assistance, to complete the Application process as early as possible.

Wednesday’s visit marked the third consecutive week since the break that Minister Campbell has made good on that promise. The Minister kicked off the summer tour July 31 with two-day visit to Grand Bahama. His first visit was to the Grand Bahama Children’s Home to which the Government provides an annual subvention.

Minister Campbell also participated in a cheque presentation made to the Board of Directors of the Home, before continuing the visit with a stop at the Columbus Houses for Boys and Girls – a partnership between the Government of The Bahamas through the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development and the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

The Minister’s next stop was to the Department of Social Services (DOSS), Grand Bahama, where he held a staff meeting and toured DOSS facilities in Freeport and Eight Mile Rock. Minister Campbell concluded the Grand Bahama visit Thursday (August 1) with a tour of the Grand Bahama Home and Daycare for the Aged and Children’s Centre, Preschool and Nursery. The Home and Daycare Centre is one of several facilities the ministry either provides subventions to, or has established public, private partnerships with, that Minister Campbell visited to assess needs while in Grand Bahama.

The following Wednesday (July 7), Minister Campbell traveled to Rolleville, Exuma, where he used the opportunity surrounding the Re-Commissioning of the Rolleville Police Station to meet with Social Services staff, residents and clients.

“As I would have indicated during the break from the House of Assembly, I wish to take the opportunity to visit sites, to visit islands, Homes, to visit all of those Centres that would fall under my remit as Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, whether in New Providence, Grand Bahama, or the Family Islands.

“And so for the past two Wednesdays I would have been in Grand Bahama in the first instance, and Exuma in the second. Today, I had the opportunity to visit with the good people who work at Pitt Road and to speak with some of the clients. There was a level of frustration with some of the clients, but simultaneously, there was also a level of satisfaction with others.

“I took the opportunity to also speak with the management and staff at the Pitt Road Centre and had some frank discussions regarding the questions they had pertaining to Career Path and matters related thereto. In closing, I reminded staff members that my only request is that they be ever mindful of their clients, using the Golden Rule ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

“I further reminded them of the vicissitudes of life and the inclemency of life’s seasons which today, could have them as service providers and God forbid tomorrow, have them as service seekers. The visitation with staff and clientele went extremely well.”

Minister Campbell called the Exuma visit, as with the visits to the Family Islands, special.

“Our work and mandate is about going to where the people are. The field trips to the Family Islands provides us with opportunities to reinforce what I always say: that our work is not just Nassau-centric and that whatever efforts are being done in New Providence to make assistance available in any way, form or fashion, will also be done in the Family Islands.”
