Nassau, The Bahamas – Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell, recently endorsed the effort behind the book “Revelations of a Silent Heart” by literally “putting his money where his mouth is” and purchasing the first five copies of the book during its launch on Friday (April 26).

Minister Campbell said he will undertake a number of other initiatives to further assist the book’s author, Mr. Kevin Eldon Cartwright. The launch was held at the offices of the Disability Affairs Division of the Department of Social Services, Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development.

“Revelations of a Silent Heart” is a compilation of poems based on the life experiences of the author who lost his sight to glaucoma at eight years of age. The book is currently available in hard copy and additionally in audio in order for the author to fulfill his desire to “make this accessible to persons who are blind or visually impaired.”

Mr. Cartwright said there are plans for a few copies of the book to eventually be made available in Braille, but that the process is “a very costly undertaking.”

Minister Campbell applauded Mr. Cartwright for “ his courage and determination in following through on his dream.”

“From the time I became Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, I have always promoted abilities over disabilities. I have promoted access and inclusion to help deal with the challenges of living with a disability -- but to never lose sight of the actual abilities, because those [persons] will be the ones who will go on to inspire others,” Minister Campbell said.

“Offerings such as this and other initiatives that are being undertaken by persons with disabilities, are helping me to further champion the cause of promoting the abilities of persons who may be living with a disability, as opposed to focusing on the disability with which they may live.

“I am personally very proud of Mr. Cartwright’s courage and determination in this venture and from reading the first poem (Give Me Your Eyes), I am intrigued by it, and give him my personal support and that of the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development,” Minister Campbell added.

Mr. Cartwright said the Book, his first literary offering for publication, was inspired by personal experiences, interactions with family and friends, and a love for literature.

“I teach the Language Arts Curriculum (at the Erin H. Gilmour School for the Blind) and have always enjoyed Literature as it gives you the opportunity to really create and express through imagery and setting and to use all of your senses in creating an environment and atmosphere so that when someone picks up a copy of your writings, or hears an audio copy of it, those writings come alive.”

A Commissioner with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Cartwright said he looks forward to continuing the partnership between the Ministry and the National Commission in building “a brighter and better future” for persons living with disabilities.

“Minister I am so grateful to you for taking the opportunity to come and share in this experience with me today and I am hopeful that you, and all of the others who purchase copies of the Book, will find a great deal of enjoyment, encouragement and hope through my writings. I appreciate your support and I am so happy that I am able to contribute in my little way to the literacy initiative in our country.

“As a Commissioner with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, this is a happy day for all of us with the release of this book. I look forward to your continued support as we continue to work together, hand-in-hand, towards building a brighter and better future for persons with disabilities here in our country,” Mr. Cartwright added.
