Commonwealth Secretary General Met with Women Leaders During Visit to The Bahamas

Nassau, The Bahamas - Secretary General of the Commonwealth, the Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland met with women representing government, the private sector, and civil society on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at the Ministry of Social Services Headquarters, University Drive.  The Secretary General made the visit to The Bahamas following last month's devastation of northern islands -- Grand Bahama and Abaco -- by massive Hurricane Dorian.

During her stay here, the Secretary General has visited both islands and met with several persons, including Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis; Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Darren Henfield; Minister of Social Services and Urban Development the Hon. Frankie Campbell; and Minister of Tourism & Aviation the Hon. Dionisio D'Aguilar.

The meeting with leading women was held to discuss some of the issues affecting women including domestic violence, inequality, and climate change.  Secretary General Scotland said that both men and women are needed to effect change in the world. She also said that every time a woman is disenfranchised, men and children also suffer.

Addressing the gathering, also, were: Senator the Hon. Mildred Hall-Watson; former Attorney-General and first Bahamian woman elected to Parliament, Dame Janet Bostwick; Member of Parliament for Englerston, the Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin; Ms. Ali McIntosh; Mrs. Arinthia Komalafe; and Director of Gender and Family Affairs, Ministry of Social Services, Dr. Jacinta Higgs.   (BIS Photos/Derek Smith)
