FREEPORT, The Bahamas - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Urban Development the Hon. Philip Davis visited Grand Bahama on Thursday, for an impromptu visit to a number of sites where projects tendered by the government are presently under construction.
Among the places he visited was the site of the new bridge, known as the Fishing Hole Road Trestle Bridge, considered to be vital for Grand Bahama. For local residents, the bridge will be the solution to flooding at the Fishing Hole Road, which has plagued Grand Bahama for years.
During his visit to the site, the Deputy Prime Minister, along with the Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, got an opportunity to speak with the contractors, builders and workers at the site. Leading the tour of the site was Wolfgang Geiger, president of All Bahamas Construction, the company awarded the contract to build the bridge.
Mr. Davis and Dr. Darville saw the progress of the construction of the bridge and were updated on the Fishing Village, which will be located near the bridge.
According to the contractors, the Fishing Village will serve as an attraction for tourists, as well as local residents, as vendors will have the opportunity to serve native and cultural dishes to the public.
“The idea for the Fishing Village was simply a solution to relocating the existing fish vendors who occupied the northern side of the Fishing Hole Road,” said Contractors of ABC Construction.
They reported, “It became a greater vision with a master plan drafted to include the construction of a Fishing Village within two phases: The first phase will comprise six vendor booths, renovation and repair of the existing seawall, along with male and female bathrooms, landscaping and parking.
“Phase two will comprise of six additional booths, a renovated and repaired boat ramp, extension of seawall, a covered fish cleaning station, a system for the deposit of conch shells, additional parking, a security booth, landscaping and sitting area for public use.”
