NASSAU, The Bahamas – The family of Lisa Davis, a Bahamian appointed Director of Fitness to Practice at the General Optical Council in London, could not be any more proud of her accomplishments.

According to her father, Errol Bethel, retired Parliamentary Commissioner, his daughter is just doing what she loves and excelling at it.

“Lisa has really found her niche. She is doing something that she loves doing and is very good at it,” he says.

The General Optical Council (GOC) announced January 6, 2015 that Lisa Davis has been appointed as its new Director of Fitness to Practice, replacing outgoing Director of Regulation Mandie Lavin.

The GOC is the regulator for the optical profession in the United Kingdom; its purpose is to protect the public by promoting high standards of education, conduct and performance amongst opticians. There are approximately 25,000 registered optometrists, dispensing opticians, student opticians and optical businesses.

Davis’s bio contains an impressiv list of accomplishments; amongst them being a qualified barrister who first worked within fitness to practice at the General Pharmaceutical Council as an advocate and then Case Progression Manager.

Mr. Bethel speaks highly of his daughter’s accomplishments and how the family is very proud of her.

“She was an exceptional student and is now an exceptional lawyer. She masters whatever she attempts and brings credit to the organization where she works. “Lisa's appointment as Director of Fitness to Practice by the General Optical Council of the UK is a tremendous achievement and we, the family, are proud of her and of her accomplishment,” says her father.

About her own accomplishments and recent appointment in an online GOC article, Davis says she is looking forward to her new role.

“Fitness to practice is extremely important for public protection and I look forward to this new phase of my employment with the GOC. One of my biggest priorities will be to continue the work we have already started to speed up the FTP (Fitness to Practice) process in the interests of both patients and registrants,” she says.

Davis will have the responsibility of overseeing the fitness to practice, legal compliance and hearings teams, as well as managing the GOC’s contractual relationship with the Optical Consumer Complaints Service. The online article also reflects the GOC chief executive registrar Samantha Peters’ “high regard” of Davis and her appointment. “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Lisa Davis to the new role of Director of Fitness to Practice, Lisa brings tremendous experience and knowledge of fitness to practice proceedings. “I and the rest of our staff and council members, look forward to working more closely with Lisa and [are] excited to see the new ideas Lisa will bring on board,” Peters says.

Lisa is the daughter of Errol Bethel and retired schoolteacher Ingrid Bethel. She attended Queen’s College before transferring to St Anne’s High School where she graduated valedictorian in 1994.

Having being brought up in the Anglican Church, Lisa is said to have credited her interest in studying law to a discussion with the late Anglican Archdeacon William Thompson.

However, at first she enrolled in the journalism programme at the College of the Bahamas but changed to History – a requirement for Law.

Davis graduated from the College of the Bahamas in 1996 with an Associates of Arts degree in History and then commenced her legal studies at Keele University in the United Kingdom in September 1996.

She graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor’s degree in Law and undertook her Bar Vocational Course in Nottingham, UK from 1999 to 2000, which culminated with her Call to the Bar in July 2000 at London’s Middle Temple, and in September 2000 in Nassau. Subsequently, she returned to London to pursue her Master’s in Law and graduated in September 2001.

Davis lives in London with her husband and two children.
